This vote could change the game for city employees by shaking up the current residency requirements that dictate where these employees must live. Right now, the city’s charter insists that city employees only be hired if they live in Tennessee. But with the new proposal, that could all change.
Mayor Kelly has set his sights on making Metro Chattanooga a more diverse and capable workforce by allowing talented individuals from neighboring regions in North Georgia and eastern Alabama to apply for city jobs. This shift has the endorsement of key officials, including the chiefs of the police and fire departments, who argue that it could provide a much-needed boost to public safety by attracting more police and fire applicants.
As many Chattanoogans know, housing prices are on the rise, and this has made it tough for middle-class city employees. Homelessness is a pressing problem that continues to plague many cities, and Chattanooga is no exception. Kelly acknowledges that rising rents have forced vulnerable populations, including elderly single women, into precarious situations.
