Chattanooga Reschedules MLK Day of Service for April 4-6 Due to Winter Weather

Chattanooga, TN – The annual MLK Day of Service, originally set to happen on January 15, 2024, has reportedly been rescheduled for April 4-6 by the City of Chattanooga. The event was disrupted by the winter weather in January, deeming it necessary to postpone.

MLK Day of Service: A Focus on Public Works Employees

The long-standing tradition of the MLK Day of Service is a reflection of the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., focusing on giving back to the community. Chattanooga Mayor, Tim Kelly, spoke enthusiastically about the reschedule, stating, “Dr. King’s determination to serve and advocate for the public wouldn’t have been deterred by the winter weather, so neither should ours”.

This year’s service, remarkably the 12th that has been organized by the City of Chattanooga and UTC, will have a unique focus: it will celebrate public works employees, the very group for whom Dr. King was fighting when he was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

First Female, First African American Solid Waste Manager Speaks

In a move that aligns with Dr. King’s principles of equality and respect, Roshonda Woods, the first female and first African American to fill the role of Chattanooga’s Solid Waste Manager, has been chosen to give a special address. Woods stated, “Serving our city in this capacity is an awesome responsibility, and continuing the legacy that Dr. King leaves behind is something that I don’t take lightly”.

Registration for Service Projects

Organizations that wish to participate can register service projects and express volunteer interest at cha.city/MLK. Mayor Kelly reassured project participants that if they had submitted project proposals for the January event, there is no need to submit another one.
