Chattanooga Gets Ready to Roll with New Mobile Payment System
Chattanooga is buzzing with excitement as the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) prepares to launch its much-anticipated mobile payment system this coming Monday, December 16, 2024. For many public transit riders, this means an end to fumbling for cash or worrying about having exact change!
Say Goodbye to the Old Ways
For years now, CARTA riders have mainly relied on cash and coins to pay their fare, which is $1.50 for a single ride. But with the new system, riders will have the convenience of purchasing tickets through the Token Transit application right from their smartphones. No more long lines or last-minute scrambles for change!
According to officials, riders can easily create an account in the app, input their payment details—think bank cards and even Cash App!—and purchase tickets that they can activate and show to the driver when it’s time to board. How easy is that?

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. During a recent meeting, a member of the CARTA board noted that the public has been eager for an alternative payment method. And who can blame them? Riding public transit should be hassle-free!
Even bus operators are cheering this development. Lakecha Strickland, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1212, expressed delight, stating that mobile ticketing will not only make the boarding process faster but will also ease the congestion that comes from passengers trying to pay in cash. “We are extremely happy to move forward with this modern technology,” she said.
What Changed?
This mobile payment system was originally slated for a November launch but was postponed for final adjustments. Scott Wilson, CARTA Chief of Staff, explained that they needed additional time for quality assurance and to ensure everything was just right for the big reveal. “Once everything was verified, that’s when we set Dec. 16 as our launch date,” he mentioned in a recent email.
What’s important to note is that cash payment options will still be available for those who prefer the traditional methods. This means that whether you’re team smartphone or team cash, you’ll have a way to pay!
Not Just for Adults!
One of the coolest features that came about recently is that Chattanooga-area K-12 students can ride CARTA buses for free using a special card available at the Chattanooga Public Library. It’s an excellent way to promote public transit among younger generations, getting them accustomed to using transit options from an early age.
