The city of Chattanooga, Tennessee was blanketed in sorrow and mourning as a tight-knit community held a candlelight vigil honoring a mother and her young daughter who tragically lost their lives in a murder-suicide earlier this month.
“It’s hard to conceive that such a tragedy could actually befall your family,” expressed LaToia Smith, a family member of the victims. The police disclosed that Jessica Smith and her six-year-old daughter, Ailin were victims in a double murder-suicide case earlier this March. The family held a candlelight vigil at Barger Academy to commemorate and celebrate the life of the mother and daughter.
“Remembering their joyful spirits brings comfort during these dark times,” shared Jessica’s sister, Ta’Leea Smith. “Ailin was always full of warmth and sweetness. She loved to play hide-and-seek. Strangely enough, that also happens to be my final memory of her.”
Friday’s vigil was a poignant gathering where family members chose to participate in a celebration of the life of their loved ones, rather than dwell on their tragic demise. “Inspired by Jessica, I want to strive to be the best mom possible. Ailin filled our lives with her infectious laughter and joyous giggles,” LaToia narrates fondly of her impeccably close relationship with both Jessica and Ailin.
The community’s involvement during this time of grief demonstrates the deep-seated bonds and support system within Chattanooga. Family, friends, and community members fondly remembered Jessica and Ailin’s close bond, their charming quirks, and their positivity in the face of adversity.
Ailin’s caring family has been commended for their unwavering support, influencing her growth immensely. “Without her family’s rock-solid support and encouragement, Ailin wouldn’t have blossomed as she did,” Ailin’s school coach recalls.
Lingering heartbreakingly, were the family’s recollections of the pair’s last words to them. Haley Jones, an adopted sister of the family, shares her interaction with Jessica, “When I talked to her last Tuesday, she assured me that she was doing well, and that everything was going along smoothly.”
“Jessica was so upbeat, so tirelessly happy; it was difficult to see this coming. She would always tell me how content and happy she was,” Ta’Leea shared.
Despite the sorrow this unfortunate incident has cast over the entire Chattanooga community, the spirit of compassion and unity has only served to bring everyone closer together. The family has set up a GoFundMe to help finance Jessica and Ailin’s funeral services, set to take place by the end of the month.
