Chattanooga Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Residents

Farewell to Three Beloved Community Members

Chattanooga, Tennessee, is mourning the loss of several cherished residents who have recently passed away. Their contributions to the community and the love they shared with their families and friends will not be forgotten.

A Heartfelt Goodbye to Barbara Sligh Wright

On November 14, 2024, the vibrant and loving Barbara Sligh Wright left this world at the age of 91, surrounded by her caring family in the comfort of her home on Signal Mountain. Born on June 28, 1933, in the Jonesboro/Atlanta area, Barbara was the epitome of what it meant to be a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Wright Sr., and her two sons, Edward Jr. (Woody) and Steven Wright. She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Lee and her husband, Chuck Boaz, along with her siblings Phillip, Jackie, and Marsha, as well as her cherished grandchildren: Alex Lee, Ashley Lee, and Samantha Wright.

Visitation to honor Barbara’s life will be held at the Marr Chapel at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 23, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a service celebrating the love and joy she brought to all who knew her. Afterward, Barbara will be laid to rest alongside Ed in a private ceremony at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In her memory, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, or any charity that holds a special place in your heart. Arrangements are being handled by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, located at 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.

Remembering Gary Eugene Toney

Another loss hangs heavy over the community with the passing of Gary Eugene Toney, 54, who passed away on October 30, 2024, in a local healthcare facility in Chattanooga. Gary was born on April 1, 1970, to Mr. Harris Eugene Toney, Jr., and leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness.

Farewell to Diana Wright Benson

On the same day that Barbara departed from us, the community also lost Diana Wright Benson, 78, who passed away at her home in Ringgold, Georgia. After a brief battle with leukemia, Diana’s spirit soared on November 14, leaving behind memories cherished by her loved ones. A longtime resident of Buena Vista, Georgia, she filled many hearts with love and laughter.

A Tribute to David Bennett Longley

In addition to these heartfelt farewells, we also remember David Bennett Longley, who passed on November 12, 2024, at the age of 83. David made a significant impact during his ten years as a beloved teacher and coach at Baylor School, and he later excelled in the business world. His influence on both students and colleagues alike will be fondly remembered.

Chattanooga has lost some remarkable individuals, but the memories of Barbara, Gary, Diana, and David will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing them. Their legacies will forever remain in the hearts of those they have touched.

As we reflect on the lives of these remarkable individuals, let us remember to cherish our time with loved ones and continue to support one another during these difficult days. The community extends its deepest condolences to the families affected by these losses.
