Chattanooga has recently been touched by sorrow as it bids farewell to some cherished members of the community. Among them is James “Wayne” Caughman, who passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. As a native of Tupelo, Mississippi, Wayne was born on February 19, 1941, and his journey through life was filled with warmth and dedication to his family. His final moments were shared with his beloved wife and sons, a testament to the strong family bonds he nurtured throughout his life.
Wayne’s life story is one of resilience and connection. Known for his friendly demeanor, he leaves behind not just a family but also friends and a community that deeply values the relationships he built over the years. His legacy is not just in the memories shared but also in the lessons of kindness and perseverance he imparted to those around him.
Just a day earlier, on September 11, 2024, the community was saddened by the passing of Sue Reardon. Born on February 8, 1951, in Chattanooga, Sue touched countless lives with her generous spirit and infectious laughter. A daughter of the late Carl Watson Bray and Edna Earle Bray, Sue was a pillar of support for her family and friends.
She is remembered fondly for her outgoing personality and her willingness to help others. Sue’s passing further reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment we have with those we love. Her legacy of compassion will continue to inspire many, enhancing the lives she touched directly and indirectly throughout her life.
The residents of Chattanooga also mourn the loss of Norma Embrey Brewster, who passed away on August 24, 2024. Born in Nashville on May 18, 1941, Norma migrated to Chattanooga, where she graduated from Central High School in 1959. Her educational journey laid a foundation of knowledge and values that she carried into adulthood and shared with her family.
Norma was well-loved for her nurturing attitude and her incredible ability to lift the spirits of those around her. Friends often referred to her as a beacon of hope and joy, always ready with a smile or a comforting word—the qualities that endeared her to many. Her mark on the community extends far beyond her immediate family, as she engaged in countless acts of service over the years.
As Nashville and Chattanooga come together in this period of mourning, several themes arise: love, joy, and community. Each of these incredible individuals left a legacy of joy and connection that we all cherish. The impact of Wayne, Sue, and Norma will not fade; rather, it will flourish in the memories and stories shared among family and friends.
Funeral services and memorials are being planned, and the community is expected to come together to honor these wonderful lives. As we remember their contributions to our lives, we encourage everyone to reach out to their loved ones. Celebrate the lives we still have and cherish the memories of those we’ve lost.
Chattanooga, while mourning the loss of Wayne, Sue, and Norma, also embraces the shared strength and warmth that comes from uniting as a compassionate community. In remembrance, let us hold tight to the love that lasts forever and pass it along to those who need it most.
