Chattanooga Mourns the Loss of Katharine “Katie” Michelle Patterson

Chattanooga, Tennessee, has lost a shining light with the passing of Katharine “Katie” Michelle Patterson, who passed away on April 2, 2025, at the tender age of 39. Surrounded by her loving family and friends, Katie’s struggle against a brain tumor and cancer lasted nearly 15 years, but her spirit remained unbroken as she faced her battle with hope and strength.

A Bright Beginning

Born on January 27, 1986, in Decatur, Alabama, Katie spent her formative years in the Tennessee city of Chattanooga. She attended Chattanooga Christian School and graduated in 2004 before embarking on an educational journey at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. In 2008, she earned her degree in elementary education, ready to inspire young minds as a teacher.

A Life of Adventure

Katie’s zest for life led her to embrace the great outdoors, fueling her passion for adventure. She worked for two seasons at the renowned Keystone Ski Resort in Colorado, embracing the frosty slopes with laughter and exhilaration. During her off seasons, she served as a river rafting guide on the scenic Pigeon River in East Tennessee, guiding adventurous souls through the wilderness. Her love for nature also took her to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where she was a crew member at LeConte Lodge for two seasons, helping others to appreciate the beauty of the mountains.

A Long Battle

In 2011, Katie’s life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Yet, she refused to allow her illness to sideline her adventurous spirit. Even while undergoing cancer treatments, she continued to hike, travel, and go on mission trips. Her commitment to serving others never wavered; she continued to minister to children, the elderly, and the homeless throughout her illness, showcasing the true essence of a heart dedicated to helping others.

Faith and Community

Deeply rooted in her faith, Katie found strength in her belief. She attended Woodland Park Baptist Church, where she surrendered her heart to Jesus, and actively participated in the church community. She also engaged with the Citizens of Heaven Church and was a member of Silverdale Baptist singles group, fostering connections that enriched her life and the lives of those around her.

Remembering Katie

Katie is survived by her loving parents, Linda and Ken Hill, and Kelly Patterson, along with her cherished siblings: Kenneth “Trey” Hill III, Michael, and William Patterson. She was preceded in death by her father, Michael “Mickey” Patterson, and many other beloved family members, leaving behind a wide circle of aunts, uncles, and treasured cousins who will miss her dearly.

A Celebration of Life
