EPB’s Community Mural Project Enriches Chattanooga’s Landscape with Unity and History
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A dazzling kaleidoscope of color is transforming the heart of Chattanooga, with EPB’s Community Mural Project at the forefront. This recent creative addition vibrantly dresses the EPB’s substation, located on Chattanooga’s 10th Street, and stands as an emblem of unity, diversity, and history.
Artists of Chattanooga Breathing Life into 10th Street
These effusive expressions of art, conceived by locally-based artists, spread across the four corners of the EPB’s substation. Each distinct mural takes on a unique theme, with the most recent entitled ‘The Magic of Unity.’ This particular mural encapsulates the transformative power of collective labors, symbolizing the impact of unity on instigating positive change.
Elizabeth Hamitt, Director at EPB, expressed her support for the local artists, stating the Community Mural Project serves not only as a platform for showcasing artistic talents and launching careers, but also as an avenue for voices within the community to be heard. She mentioned that the project has heavily represented women and minorities, highlighting their unique contributions.
A Legacy Embroidered into Chattanooga’s Cityscape
Earlier this year, EPB issued a publicad inviting Chattanooga artists to submit their work. The response was overwhelming, and in March, the company shortlisted 10 gifted artists. They were given the opportunity to paint the murals and leave their creative legacies emblazoned on the 10th Street Substation’s walls. The chosen artists include Christen McNelly, Jaclyn Lewis, Jerome Foster, Juanita Montgomery, Justin Butts, Karen Estes, Lexi D’Ambrosio, Olivia Reckert, Rea Shaw, and Sofia Rudakevych.
James McKissic, President of Artbuild, commented on the project’s success over the years. He praised the 10th Murals Project for adding vibrancy to the MLK Blvd area, celebrating its historical roots, traditions, and culture. He further noted the critical role of collaborative effort in not only creating opportunities for local artists, but also providing a powerful professional platform for those underrepresented in the community.
