Chattanooga’s vibrant music community is set to commemorate the annual Make Music Day on June 21st, 2024. The city will join in the global celebration with a city-wide music festival featuring free, live musical performances, opportunities to make music, interactive workshops, and other music-related events.
The musical revels in Chattanooga are a part of over a thousand global festivities taking place on the same day, all inspired by France’s Fête de la Musique. The day-long Chattanooga festival is planned across distinct sections of the city and will be hosted by a diverse array of local community members, musical organizations, educators, and students.
Mayor Tim Kelly enthusiastically reinforced the immense importance of arts and culture in Chattanooga, explaining that the civic duty to develop the arts sector is among the core priorities of his One Chattanooga Plan. He expressed his hope that the event would foster a hearty enjoyment of music throughout Chattanooga’s tight-knit community.
Simultaneously, Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp drew attention to Hamilton County’s extensive legacy of nurturing high-achieving young talent in arts. The music industry has seen iconic figures such as Usher, Bessie Smith, and Kane Brown, all of whom have their roots in Hamilton County public schools, offering palpable evidence of the region’s vibrant music scene.
Make Music Day Chattanooga is brought to life by the collective efforts of several community organizations, including ArtsBuild, Chattanooga Tourism Co., the City of Chattanooga, Lyndhurst Foundation, RISE Chattanooga, River City Company, SoundCorps, SoundMind Creative Strategies, to name a few. The concerted action reflects Chattanooga’s commitment to creating a thriving music community and support local music venues. These are two aspects identified as pivotal in the 2022 Chattanooga Music Census.
Local artists have voiced their excitement for the upcoming festival. Founding artist Karen Collins of The Velvet Chair Experience praised musical expression as a powerful means of connecting with others. For her, it’s not just about the genre but the rush of joy in being able to celebrate the immense creativity of Chattanooga’s artists on this special day.
An open invitation has been extended to all music lovers in Chattanooga to participate in the celebrations.
