Within the vibrant music scene of Chattanooga, Randy Steele stands out as a notable figure. As a top-tier musician, dad, husband, and firefighter, Randy emphasizes the wealth of talent emerging from the city’s local venues. Anticipation grows as he prepares for his September 5th pop-up concert at Vagabond Barber Company.
Steele fondly discusses the growing music communities around venues like Barrelhouse Ballroom, The Woodshop, and Barking Legs Theater. These spots foster “microcosms” of the local music scene, with impressive talents often revealing themselves on Jam Nights, Bluegrass Nights, and Sunday Fundays. “I’ve found great artists here in town sometimes before they really blew up,” Randy shares, referencing bands like Strung like a Horse and War and Treaty.
In the spirit of supporting and promoting local art, Steele recommends three standout musicians: Nathan Bell, Tyler Martelli, and Nicholas Edward Williams.
Known for his exceptional songwriting, Nathan Bell’s lyrics are noted for their honesty and depth. Steele describes Bell as a “tough older guy from up north” with an ability to create vivid, well-developed characters and pointed narratives. Bell often performs in the UK and other European cities, so catching him live in Chattanooga is a rare treat.
Martelli, a long-time bandmate of Steele, is a musician truly dedicated to his craft. “Tyler beams when he is playing; he’s having fun, and it shows,” Steele remarks. Martelli’s schedule includes a multi-state tour with Monrovia, an album release titled ‘Dirt’, and collaborations with Strung like a Horse. His passion for music is evident both onstage and off, making him a key figure in Chattanooga’s music scene.
Williams, host of the podcast ‘The American Songcatcher’, combines history and music in an inspiring mix. Apart from his solo projects, he tours with his band, The NEW Quintet. Williams’ melodious and heartfelt performances are both captivating and comforting, suitable for various settings from intimate gatherings to festival stages.
Randy Steele himself is set to perform at part of the Quiet City pop-up concert series on September 5th at Vagabond Barber Company. Joining him on stage will be Tigris Nevans and Joshua Cruce. The music event kicks off at 8 PM with a modest $10 cover charge.
