The Chattanooga community is in mourning as they pay tribute to Noel “Sonny” Crawley, a beloved law enforcement icon who passed away at the age of 87. Known for his dedication and mentorship, Sonny served over 32 years with the Chattanooga Police Department and left a legacy of service and community care. His impactful life is celebrated by many who knew him, culminating in a memorial service scheduled for February 5, 2025.
Chattanooga is filled with both sorrow and gratitude as the community remembers Noel “Sonny” Crawley, who passed away at the age of 87 on January 27, 2025. A beloved figure in local law enforcement, Sonny dedicated a significant part of his life to serving and protecting the people of Chattanooga. Known for his vibrant spirit and mentorship, Sonny’s memory is cherished by his family, friends, and all those he impacted during his illustrious career.
Sonny was born on February 13, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas, and he later grew up in Chattanooga, showcasing his love for the community from a young age. Having graduated from Tyner High School, Sonny was quite the athlete and showcased his talent in baseball while attending Kirkman Technical High School. He then went on to pursue his passion for law enforcement, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1976. His commitment to service was evident as he also attended Cleveland State Community College to further his law enforcement education.
After fulfilling his duties in the United States Army Reserves, Sonny proudly served in the United States Air Force. This military background laid the groundwork for his long-standing dedication to law enforcement. He became a police officer with the City of Chattanooga, devoting over 32 years to the Chattanooga Police Department (CPD), followed by another 10 years with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. His commitment to his role was unwavering, as he not only enforced the law but genuinely cared for the community he served.
Beyond the badge, Sonny was more than just a police officer; he was a mentor and friend to countless residents. His influence reached far beyond the streets of Chattanooga. People often turned to him for guidance, and he selflessly helped many throughout his law enforcement career. As a lifetime member of the NRA, he fiercely supported his fellow law enforcement officers and stood up for their rights.
When he wasn’t busy serving his community, Sonny could be found on the water, as he had a profound love for boating and parasailing. He enjoyed teaching friends and family how to parasail, creating cherished memories on the local lakes. Those who knew him remember these moments fondly, as they reflect his fun-loving spirit and a zest for life.
Sonny leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife of 47 years, Jo Crawley. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Judy French and Phyllis Green, brother-in-law Bobby Green, as well as nephews Michael French (Kim) and David Hartman, and great-niece and nephew Katie and Wesley Hartman. His enduring legacy also includes many dear friends and fellow law enforcement officers who remember him fondly.
A Celebration of Sonny’s life is set to take place at 12:30 p.m. on February 5 at the East Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home, where Chaplain Brent Baughman will officiate the service. Family and friends are welcome to gather before the service starts at 10:30 a.m. For those wishing to honor Sonny’s military service, interment will occur at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, complete with military honors from the US Air Force Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 95.
Sonny Crawley’s dedication to law enforcement and the community will not be forgotten. His legacy shines brightly through the countless lives he touched, and he’s left an indelible mark on Chattanooga. The community stands together in remembrance as they celebrate a life that exemplified dedication, love, and adventure.
