Remembering Local Legends: The Lives We Cherish in Chattanooga

Chattanooga, a city full of warmth and community spirit, recently said farewell to some remarkable individuals who made their mark on our lives. From dedicated community members to loving family figures, their legacies will be cherished forever. Let’s take a moment to remember and honor these local heroes who have passed on.

Jack C. Bryden, Jr.: A Life of Service and Community

On March 6, 2025, the curtains drew on the life of Jack C. Bryden, Jr. at the age of 84. He passed away peacefully in his Hixson home, surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly. Born on April 2, 1940, in Chattanooga, Jack grew up in the cozy neighborhood of Gobblers Peak, where he built many of his cherished memories.

Jack was a proud graduate of Central High School, class of 1958, and later attended the University of Chattanooga—a stepping stone that would lead him to a fulfilling career. He bravely served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant during the intense Cuban Missile Crisis. Once his service concluded, Jack brought his dedication to the workplace, spending an impressive 44 years at companies like Combustion Engineering, ABB, and Alstom Power. Starting as a mail clerk, he climbed the ranks to become a project engineer, retiring in 2003.

Jack’s commitment did not end with his career. He was honored as a Distinguished Citizen of Hamilton County in 2003 and held the position of senior warden at Thankful Memorial Episcopal Church for 1985-1986. His involvement extended to the Tennessee State Convention of Episcopal Churches as a delegate and to the National Convention as an alternate delegate, showcasing his deep-rooted connection to the community.

Jeannine Jones Caylor: A Life Well-Lived

Another beloved figure we lost is Jeannine Jones Caylor, who passed away on March 5, 2025, at the wise age of 93. Jeannine, born on October 20 in Woodstation, Georgia, cultivated a life filled with joy and love. She spent almost 65 dedicated years with her husband Thurman Caylor, thus leaving behind a legacy of devotion that will be remembered by those who knew her.

Rita Darlene Luttrell: A Heartfelt Farewell

In Ooltewah, during the same timeframe, we mourned the loss of Rita Darlene Luttrell, who passed at the age of 66 on March 5, 2025. Born in Chattanooga, she was the daughter of the late James Perry and Hilda Sain Perry. Rita’s life touched many, and her gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved.

Herbert Dallis: A Pillar in the Community

On March 2, 2025, Herbert Dallis, 87, of Chattanooga left his earthly home. Born in 1937 to George W. and Georgie B. Dallis, Herbert had a full, vibrant life, and his absence will surely be felt throughout the community.

John “David” Coates: A Family Man

The life of John “David” Coates, who passed away on September 24, 2024, also deserves recognition. At 79 years old, David was a dedicated family man, with a special passion for sports—particularly, the Alabama Football team. David grew up in Red Bank, attended local schools, and retired after a long career with the Tennessee American Water Company after 42 years of service. He found joy in his family, leaving behind his wife Lynn Coates, his three children, and a lovely granddaughter.

Each of these individuals embodied the spirit of community, showing us how to live life with purpose and love. As we reflect on their contributions and celebrate their lives, may we continue to carry their legacies forward in our hearts.
