Chattanooga Forms Heartwarming Partnership with Ukrainian City Trostyanets

Chattanooga, known for its beautiful landscapes and friendly community, is now stepping into the global spotlight with its newest collaboration. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a delightful reception that celebrated Chattanooga’s partnership with the Ukrainian city of Trostyanets, which has been directly impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It was a truly moving experience, especially meeting the city’s mayor, Yuriy Bova.

A Warm Welcome

Mayor Tim Kelly from Chattanooga formalized a cooperative agreement with Bova, who has been leading Trostyanets through the aftermath of war. It was heartening to see an international bond forming—one that holds great promise for both cities. During my conversation with Bova and his interpreter, I was thrilled to see that he was enthusiastic about reaching out digitally. To my surprise and delight, he agreed to an interview for my podcast!

Facing the Past

The thought of this connection filled me with both excitement and nerves. It reminded me of my experience interviewing Holocaust survivors many years ago. The reality of those conversations changed me forever, and I sensed that speaking with Bova would be just as impactful. His stories about the month-long occupation of Trostyanets by Russian troops in 2022 were haunting, yet I knew I had to hear them.

Bova described the chilling actions of the special forces who occupied his city, revealing that they killed innocent civilians simply going about their daily lives. Grocery shopping, visiting doctors — these mundane activities became dangerous. They looted everything in sight, even hospital equipment, as they sought to crush the spirit of his community. Bova shared that the anger they felt was palpable; Trostyanets, with its modern hospital, faced complete devastation at their hands.

The Heart of a Community

“It’s gut-wrenching,” Bova said, reflecting on the trauma his citizens endured and the displacement of families who fled their homes. We could all feel the pain in his voice as he emphasized the importance of rebuilding everything that had been lost. His determination to revive and bring people back to Trostyanets is inspiring. “We have to fight for every person who should return,” he passionately stated.

Renewal and Rebirth

Though the road to recovery is steep, Trostyanets has made significant strides since being liberated. Bova is currently leading efforts in a pilot program aimed at restoring his city and developing skills necessary for wider reconstruction across Ukraine. He warmly expressed gratitude towards Chattanoogans who had so generously raised funds for crucial supplies, like generators, enabling schools to maintain their operations amidst continued Russian attacks on infrastructure.

It’s worth noting that Trostyanets and Chattanooga have exciting common goals—particularly regarding education and career development. Plans are already in motion to foster collaboration between Trostyanets’ university and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). It’s heartwarming to see such international initiatives come to life!

A Sweeter Future

There’s a hint of optimism in the air, especially with reports that 95% of Trostyanets’ citizens have returned home. It seems that the resilience of the human spirit shines the brightest in dark times. As they rebuild, Trostyanets is not just an ally; they symbolize hope for Ukraine and the surrounding regions.

Our partnership isn’t just a gesture of goodwill; it’s also essential for the economic stability of Chattanooga. As our city becomes a hub for international industries, supporting Trostyanets safeguards not only their citizens but also our own community’s prosperity against potential threats.
