Chattanooga Plane Crash: Preliminary NTSB Report Offers Insights

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the unfortunate plane crash that happened on November 19 has just been released, shedding light on what transpired during that fateful day.

Who Was Involved?

The incident involved a flight instructor and a private pilot who were on a training flight aimed at prepping for the private pilot’s instrument check-ride. Both individuals were working hard to ensure a comprehensive training experience, meticulously going over everything before takeoff.

The Flight Begins

According to the report, the private pilot completed a thorough preflight inspection and an engine run-up, emphasizing that everything seemed normal. However, shortly after taking off from Lovell Field Airport (CHA), the situation began to take a troubling turn.

Engine Troubles in the Sky

Upon takeoff, the aircraft’s engine began to lose power, dropping to a concerning 2,300 RPM. In the face of deteriorating conditions, the private pilot immediately contacted air traffic control (ATC), indicating they were entering instrument meteorological conditions and needed to return to land.

Emergency Procedures Activated

As the engine continued to sputter, the pilot made the brave call, declaring an emergency. Luckily, they managed to catch a glimpse of the runway, but unfortunately, they approached too quickly for a safe landing. A go-around was performed to avoid a disastrous landing that could have sent them off the runway and into a cluster of trees.

A Last-Ditch Effort

Desperation set in as the engine finally succumbed to failure, losing total power just as the aircraft began to climb above the trees. With no other alternatives, the private pilot decided to aim for an off-field landing, targeting a road on which to safely land.

The Impact

During this emergency maneuver, the aircraft clipped a few trees and came to rest along the side of Shallowford Road. The Cessna 172, identifiable by its tail number N951JA, unfortunately suffered substantial damage, particularly to the fuselage and wings. Thankfully, there was no post-impact fire, which could have complicated matters further.

What Happens Next?

The wreckage of the airplane has been transported to a salvage facility where it will be examined in detail, particularly focusing on the engine’s condition. As the investigation continues, it’s worth noting that this information is preliminary and further updates are expected as officials sift through the details.
