Pothole-filled road in Chattanooga with maintenance signs

News Summary

Residents of Chattanooga are increasingly voicing their concerns regarding the poor state of local roads, particularly Morris Hill Road, Igou Gap Road, and Crest Road. With growing frustration over pothole neglect, residents suggest warning signs and urge city officials to expedite repairs. Despite a significant increase in funding for road maintenance, many thoroughfares remain damaged due to years of underinvestment. The city acknowledges the need for repairs, and plans are in place to begin essential work as soon as conditions improve. Residents are encouraged to report road issues to the 311 service for timely responses.

Chattanooga Residents Urge City to Address Pothole Repairs and Road Maintenance Issues

Chattanooga is facing a growing concern among its residents over the state of its roads. With local thoroughfares such as Morris Hill Road, Igou Gap Road, and Crest Road falling into disrepair, residents are becoming increasingly vocal about the necessary repairs. It’s clear that something has to change.

One concerned resident, tired of dodging potholes, has suggested posting warning signs near these poorly maintained roads, borrowing an idea from signs typically seen in deserted areas. Meanwhile, another resident has drawn attention to the sheer size of the potholes, urging the city officials to fulfill their promises regarding road maintenance.

In addition to the impact on cars, the deteriorating condition of these roads can significantly impede other forms of transportation, such as biking and walking. This undermines the community’s vision for a bike-friendly and walkable city—a goal cherished by many residents.

The Chattanooga 311 department has acknowledged the requests for pothole repairs specifically on Igou Gap and Morris Hill Roads, with plans to initiate repairs as soon as the weather permits. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall in recent weeks has delayed these timely fixes, which typically occur within a day or two under drier conditions.

Amidst these challenges, the Kelly Administration has recognized the critical need for road repairs and has allocated an impressive $1 million towards repaving Crest Road, pending approval from the City Council. This allocation is part of a larger effort that has seen over $50 million invested in road repairs over the last four years. This marks a significant shift from previous administrations that spent only $3 million annually.

Despite the city’s efforts and the funds already earmarked for repairs, numerous roads are left in disarray, a result of years of underinvestment. Residents are being encouraged to continue reporting potholes and road issues to the 311 service to help ensure prompt attention.

Justin Strickland from the Department of Public Works has shared that preparations are underway to kick off the 2025 repaving and resurfacing season, with work beginning on February 10th. Crews will be reassessing road conditions, taking into account factors like physical decay and underground damage that may not be immediately visible.

It’s important to note that the scheduled work in council district one will depend heavily on the weather, and plans may need adjusting as conditions change. Residents can expect to see construction and maintenance work happening across various roads, complete with lane closures and detours, especially on busy routes like Frazier Avenue and Claude Ramsey Parkway.

In an unexpected turn of events, a significant water main break at the intersection of King Street and E ML King Boulevard has resulted in further road closures for repairs. This highlights the compounded challenges the city faces in addressing both water and road infrastructure simultaneously.

As Chattanooga moves forward, the hope is that persistent pressure from residents, combined with the city’s newfound commitment to investing in road maintenance, will lead to safer and smoother roads for everyone. It’s a shared journey towards a better, more connected community, and every voice counts on this road to progress.
