Chattanooga Community Unites for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Chattanooga Takes Action: Time for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — It’s that time again! Residents in Chattanooga are coming together to participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This important event encourages everyone to safely dispose of any medications that are outdated or no longer needed. With the event running from 10 AM to 2 PM, it’s a great opportunity for the community to declutter medicine cabinets and keep unused prescriptions out of harm’s way.

A Step in the Right Direction

Calandra Smith, Assistant Director of the Hamilton County Coalition, emphasizes the significance of this event, saying, “We do this in April and in October. This is the 24th Annual DEA National Drug Take Back, so the DEA sponsors this Nationwide. So, we’re doing it in our Hamilton County locations at ten different locations here.”

For those unfamiliar, this initiative is extremely vital, particularly for families. A 2013 study revealed that around 15% of students in grades seven to twelve admitted to misusing prescription medications. This is quite alarming! Not only does having extra medications sit unused increase the risk of accidental poisonings—especially among young children—but it can also lead to greater issues, including addiction.

Why Dispose of Medications?

Let’s take a moment to think about it. If you have leftover medications lying around, they don’t just cause clutter. They can pose serious risks! According to data, between 2001 and 2008, there were over 450,000 poisoning cases reported in kids under six, and 95% of these involved prescription drugs. By disposing of these medications in a safe manner, we not only protect our children but also prevent any risk of misuse by adults in the home.

Be Smart and Safe

It’s also worth noting that using leftover antibiotics to self-medicate can be a dangerous game. It often leads to more harm than good, delaying the appropriate treatment needed and complicating a doctor’s ability to effectively diagnose any issues. Proper disposal is key to ensuring no one in the household takes the wrong medication or misuses what’s meant for legitimate healthcare.

Missed the Event? No Worries!

If you missed today’s Take Back event, don’t fret! There will be another opportunity in April. So, for those holding on to leftover antibiotics or any other medications, make a note to find the nearest Take Back location come April. Your proper disposal efforts make a real difference and ensure that these substances do not lead to tragic consequences.

Let’s Work Together

This event isn’t just about disposing of medications; it’s about coming together as a community to prioritize safety. It’s a reminder that as friends and neighbors, we can help each other maintain healthier and safer homes. Don’t forget to dispose of any medication that could potentially be dangerous if left lingering in your cabinets!

Together, we can make Chattanooga a safer place for everyone. Whether you have a few old pills or an entire cabinet full of forgotten medications, participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a simple yet effective step toward a responsible and safe community.
