As we hold onto the memories of Larry Wayne Cooper, Luvenia Jackson Hobbs, Hazel Barnette Lane, and Richard Thomas Auten, we celebrate the legacies each of them left behind.
Remembering Larry Wayne Cooper
Larry Wayne Cooper, aged 77, passed away on April 6, 2025. Known endearingly as PappaDaddy by his ten grandchildren, Larry was a proud father to three sons. His warmth and humor brought so much joy to his family and friends. Throughout his life, Larry was known for his loving spirit and unwavering support for those closest to him. As his family comes together to remember him, it is clear that he will be greatly missed, but his legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Luvenia Jackson Hobbs: A Life Well-Lived
At the age of 87, Luvenia Jackson Hobbs quietly departed this world on March 29, 2025, at a local healthcare facility. Born on July 8, 1937, in Chattanooga, Luvenia was a beloved figure known for her kindness and genuine nature. Friends and family will remember her not only for her gentle spirit but also for the countless ways she touched people’s lives. Her presence will be sorely missed, and the memories of her laughter and love will remain with us always.
Cherishing Hazel Barnette Lane’s Heritage
Hixson, Tennessee, also bids farewell to one of its finest, 93-year-old Hazel Barnette Lane, who passed away on April 3, 2025. A dedicated member of Hixson First Baptist Church, Hazel actively participated in her community, particularly through the Hixson Lions Club. Her tireless efforts in supporting local initiatives showcased her commitment to making the world a better place. Those who knew her can attest to the strength and kindness she radiated. In remembering Hazel, we honor her lifelong contributions and the positive change she inspired in those around her.
Richard Thomas Auten: A Pillar of Strength and Wisdom
Richard Thomas Auten, a cherished resident of Chattanooga, left us on April 5, 2025, at Memorial Hospital at the age of 80. Born on May 12, 1944, he lived a life steeped in dedication, compassion, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. After moving back to Chattanooga post-World War II, he graduated from McCallie School in 1962 and later earned his degrees from both UTC and UTK in the field of psychology. Richard served as a psychological examiner for Hamilton County Schools and Team Evaluation Center for an impressive 36 years until his retirement.
He became deeply involved in his community through First Christian Church. His contributions as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and Elder showcased his passion for helping others grow in their faith. During challenging times, he led a weekly outdoor Bible study and worship, reminding everyone of the importance of connection and spirituality. After retirement, Richard’s green thumb flourished as he became a master gardener, volunteering his time to maintain gardens for the Chattanooga Food Bank and his church. Even during his battle with Parkinson’s disease, Richard became a bright light in the community, inspiring others with the mantra “Never Give Up.” His love for his family, including his wife of 55 years, Emily, their son Thomas, daughter Elizabeth, and his precious grandsons, will be fondly remembered.
As we unite in remembering these four extraordinary individuals, let us also celebrate the lives they lived and the indelible marks they left on our community. Their spirits will continue to resonate in the stories we share and the love we give to one another. Collectively, Chattanooga honors these beautiful souls and sends love to their families during this time of grief.
Friends and family will gather on April 10, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Brainerd Chapel, to share memories and pay their respects to Richard Thomas Auten, with a celebration of his life to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested for McCallie School and Mercy Ships.
