We’ve had to take de-escalation training and learn how to stay safe during threats. I’ve been doing this for decades, and I never expected this to be the environment around voting.”

Younger Voters Hold Different Views

Contrastingly, younger voters like McCallie School Senior Bryant Shoemaker think the anxiety is overblown. “I think that this is so stupid. Everyone talks about what’s going to happen if Trump wins. Who do you think starts all these riots that you see on the news? It’s definitely not us,” he said confidently. “We’re just looking for affordable living and cheaper gas, not chaos.”

Polls and Predictions

As for the candidates, it’s been a hard-fought campaign season. In the latest news, a poll from Selzer out of Iowa has Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Trump by three points. This is a surprising twist, especially considering Trump previously won the state by a steep eight points back in 2020. Iowa’s status as the first-in-the-nation caucus state means it holds significant power come election time, so this slight edge could work in Harris’s favor.

In terms of local turnout, Hamilton County has reported a total of 117,254 votes so far, with a whopping 111,047 being early votes. Statewide, Tennessee has seen a total of 2,214,870 votes cast through early voting, which equates to an estimated 45.88% turnout.
