News Summary
Chattanooga residents should brace for traffic changes as road resurfacing operations commence across the city this week. Road crews will be working diligently to improve various streets, leading to single lane closures but maintaining two-way traffic. The city also plans a full closure on part of Chestnut Street due to a crane lift. Additionally, upcoming resurfacing on Frazier Avenue aims to enhance safety following a previous accident. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to stay alert to the changes and detours as they navigate the city.
Chattanooga Gears Up for Road Resurfacing and Construction This Week
Folks in Chattanooga, get ready for some traffic changes as the city revs into action! From now until Friday, road crews will be busy resurfacing multiple roads across the area. That’s right, the hustle and bustle of a busy city means some single lane closures are inevitable. But not to worry! Despite these lane closures, two-way traffic will be maintained thanks to diligent flagging from our trusty road crew members.
Stay Alert for Detours and Closures
As the crews work their magic, be prepared for potential brief closures of driveways and intersections. This kind of work can sometimes bring about surprises, so drivers should keep a keen eye out and remain patient. Remember, all construction efforts will largely depend on the weather, so plans may change with little notice.
In a related event, the 800 block of Chestnut Street is slated for a full closure this Saturday, February 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. due to a crane lift. Access to the parking garage will still be available for local traffic, but make sure to follow the detour signs that will be posted around the area.
Bright Neon Vests Everywhere!
If you’re out and about this week, expect to see road crews in their bright neon vests all throughout Chattanooga. They are on a mission to improve our roads as part of the 2025 repaving and resurfacing season, officially kicking off from February 10th through the 14th. This repaving work will focus specifically on council district one, with traffic being diverted as necessary during resurfacing operations.
Intelligent decisions have led to the selection of which roads need a facelift, with community input valued in the process. Various factors come into play, including road condition ratings, ensuring that the most needed areas receive attention.
Bridges on Hold
Meanwhile, you might have heard about some bridges tied to the Phase II construction project on I-24 and I-75. Unfortunately, these are currently on hold due to some unforeseen circumstances. Deficiencies in the concrete beams of the South Moore Road and McBrien Road bridges were discovered. Thankfully, Wright Brothers Construction Company is on the task of replacing those deficient beams at no extra cost to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). While the overall timeline for these bridge projects hasn’t changed, officials are still assessing how it might impact the completion dates.
Revamping Frazier Avenue for Safety
Mark your calendars because next Monday brings the start of resurfacing and restriping on Frazier Avenue, between Market Street and Barton Avenue. This improvement aims to enhance safety following a tragic crash that took place last November. The planned roadwork will include “Multi-Modal” lanes designed to keep pedestrians and cyclists safer.
The construction work is anticipated to last about four days, with lane maintenance and occasional street closures during daytime hours. Just a heads-up to everyone: street parking will be restricted in areas where the crews are working, so make sure to plan accordingly!
Safety First!
In an effort to keep our streets as safe as possible, the City of Chattanooga has launched a new website dedicated to pedestrian safety. This platform offers residents access to valuable safety data, empowering you to make smart choices while navigating the streets.
With so much activity happening in Chattanooga this week, drivers, bikers, and pedestrians alike are reminded to stay alert and patient as the city enhances its infrastructure for everyone. Whether you’re stuck in traffic or re-routing your trip, remember that these changes are all aimed at creating a safer and smoother road experience for us all!
