Attention all motorists in Chattanooga! If you’re planning to hit the roads this weekend, you might want to consider a few alternate routes. Spring Creek Road to Germantown Road on I-24 West is about to get a makeover, and it’s going to cause some temporary traffic fun. Well, fun might not be the right word—more like a headache, especially if you’re not prepared!
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is kicking off phase 2 of the I-75 at I-24 interchange improvement project. From 9 p.m. this Friday until 6 a.m. Tuesday, crews will be reducing I-24 West from three lanes down to just two. This means if you’re headed in that direction during those times, you could be facing some serious delays. Traffic alerts will be going out, so be sure to keep an ear out!
So, what exactly does this mean for you? First off, I-24 East won’t be affected, so that’s a silver lining for anyone needing to head eastward! But for those sticking to the westbound lanes, brace for a new traffic pattern once the lanes are back open. Yes, that’s right—the three lanes will have shifted to a new alignment. With that change, drivers will need to use extreme caution as they navigate the area.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to avoid the area during construction. If you can find a way to take an alternate route, do it! While the construction is done at night—which hopefully helps with minimization of disruptions—significant delays are still likely during those peak hours. Take a minute to map out your detours, so you’re not stuck in a jam, pulling your hair out!
Truck drivers, take note! If your vehicle is over 10 feet high, steer clear of the Bachman Tunnels on Ringgold Road during this time. Just a little caution can save a lot of hassle. Always remember to follow posted signs and stay alert to changing traffic conditions—the last thing you want is to be caught off guard by a detour!
Now, let’s talk about the weather—because, let’s face it, in Tennessee it’s as unpredictable as a cat on a hot tin roof! This construction is weather-dependent. If Mother Nature decides to throw a tantrum, the work might get pushed back to a later date. So, keep an eye on the forecasts this weekend!
You’ll not be alone out there on the roads. Uniformed police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. If you see them waving you through, give them a wave back and follow their instructions—their goal is to help keep things moving smoothly.
With roadwork scheduled and the potential for snarled traffic, it’s essential to stay informed. Always check local news or traffic apps for real-time updates as the weekend approaches. Drive carefully, Chattanooga, and let’s hope these improvements keep our roads safe and efficient!
Before you hit the road, stay alert and plan wisely. Your commute doesn’t have to be a struggle!
