Chattanooga Brings Christmas Cheer Through Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The spirit of Christmas is shining bright this week as the Salvation Army spreads joy to families throughout the Greater Chattanooga area. On Thursday, they kicked off their much-loved Angel Tree program, marking the second day of distributing presents to those in need.
“Today is our second day of distribution for the Angel Tree program, and you can see right now we have got toys going all over the place, helping so many families here in the Greater Chattanooga area,” said Major Douglas McClure, the Area Commander for the Salvation Army. “We are just really excited to be here. This is kind of like the highlight, kind of the pinnacle of our Christmas season.”
A Tradition of Giving Back
The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program has a proud history in Chattanooga, dating back to 1987. Each year, it brings together the community to ensure that children and families receive the gifts they deserve during this festive time. Major McClure emphasizes the importance of this project, especially when some families might not have anything under their tree this Christmas.
“We know that there could be people who do not have anything underneath their tree for Christmas. But because of the generosity of the whole community of Chattanooga, we have gifts for these families,” explained McClure. “It’s not just kids either. We also assist seniors through this program. So, it is a big deal for us.”
According to the Salvation Army, more than 1,700 families are set to receive gifts this holiday season. The volunteers and staff are working tirelessly to ensure every child and senior can experience the joy of receiving a gift on Christmas morning.
Christmas Spirit and Community Connection
For Major McClure and his team, this time of year holds a special place in their hearts. “This is the best time of the year for us. We are the Christmas people! It’s all about Christmas with our kettle program outside stores and the Angel Tree initiative. We want to make sure gifts are under the tree for everyone,” he expressed. “Christmas brings hope, and we want to be part of the hope that is brought to the Chattanooga area.”
As the holiday approaches, McClure reflects on the true meaning of Christmas. “It is about knowing that somebody loves you in this community and that there is hope for you. When it feels like dark times and you think nobody cares, you’ll know that there are people who do,” he said. “You are not just getting a toy; you are getting hope and the knowledge that someone loves you every day.”
Join the Effort to Spread Joy
The Salvation Army continues to welcome support from the community, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about their programs. Every bit of help ensures more families can feel the warmth of the season.
This holiday season, as you gather with friends and family, think about those in your community who might be struggling. You can make a difference by reaching out, whether it’s through joining the Angel Tree initiative or simply sharing kindness and love with those around you.
Let’s make this Christmas one filled with joy, hope, and connections that strengthen our beautiful Chattanooga community.
