Chattanooga, Tenn. — Hamilton County School officials have confirmed that all schools in the district will open on time for Friday, May 10th, despite the adverse weather conditions experienced earlier in the week. This announcement comes in response to various concerns from parents about road closures and transportation issues following tumultuous storms on Thursday.
The decision to remain open has sparked debate among parents in the district. This includes concerns about the condition of roads, particularly in the northern areas of Hamilton County, where several routes have been compromised. While officials believe most students can safely reach their schools, they have acknowledged that some school buses may encounter delays.
On Thursday morning, severe storms wreaked havoc across the area, resulting in widespread power outages and damage. Six schools in the Hamilton County district were impacted, particularly CSAS, which was closed as a result of nearby roads being described as “impassable.” Many parents took to social media to express their frustration with the decision to keep schools open under these conditions.
The storms began their rampage late Wednesday night, continuing into Thursday morning. By 8 PM on Thursday, Hamilton County Schools announced their plans to open on Friday, despite the fallout from the storms. In response to the public outcry, Superintendent Dr. Justin Robertson took to the airwaves to explain his rationale behind the decision to implement a two-hour delay instead of closing entirely.
Superintendent Dr. Robertson stated, “I am accountable for this decision,” while addressing parents’ concerns. He emphasized that conditions were continuously changing, which made it a challenge to gauge the safety of school openings. He regarded the power outages and road issues as “new challenges” that their team was managing. Importantly, he assured parents that any students who missed school on Thursday would not face penalties.
Despite the district’s resolve to maintain operations, many parents remain skeptical. Some voiced their opinions on the school district’s Facebook page, challenging the wisdom of keeping schools open amidst such severe weather threats. According to reports from the StormTrack 9 team, the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and even tornadoes is high, raising concerns about the safety of students commuting to and from school.
While Hamilton County Schools intend to proceed with a normal schedule on Friday, parents are encouraged to use their discretion when deciding if their children should attend. Parents are reminded that some buses may be delayed as drivers cautiously navigate hazardous routes.
As the community continues to recover from the impact of this week’s storms, officials are committed to keeping the public informed about ongoing developments. Parents are advised to stay updated through the school district’s communications, as conditions may change rapidly.
Should any further closures or delays need to be imposed in the future, parents and residents can expect timely notices from the Hamilton County Schools administration.
