Chattanooga is mourning the loss of cherished community figures, including educator Delores Irene Domineck and church leader Isaac Hilton Skillern. Chattanooga, known for its resilience and unity, is experiencing a wave of sadness as it mourns the loss of cherished community members who left behind lasting impacts both in education and the faith sector. The recent passing of Delores Irene Domineck, a beloved alumna and community leader, has deeply touched many hearts across the city.
Delores, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, quietly departed from this world on December 30, 2024, at the remarkable age of 92. Her journey in life began within the halls of Chattanooga Public Schools and was nurtured further at Howard High School. The values instilled in her during those formative years paved the way for her lifelong commitment to the community.
Despite the passing years, Delores remained an influential figure, deeply connected with various community initiatives. Her tireless efforts were not just about service; they were about uplifting others, encouraging young minds to forge their own paths. Delores’s compassion and drive touched countless lives, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Delores faced the heartbreaking loss of her son, A. L. Domineck, on March 17, 2017, when he was just 58 years old. A. L. was born on September 18, 1958, in Chattanooga, and his journey mirrored his mother’s commitment to education and faith. He graduated from Chattanooga City High School in 1976 and expanded his knowledge by earning a Christian Theology Diploma from the International Seminary through the Chattanooga Baptist Bible College and Center.
Throughout his life, A. L. served in various church roles, including being the former spiritual advisor and choir director of the Chattanooga Mass Choir. His abilities to inspire through music and mentorship were profound. He was also the former pastor of the Piney Woods Baptist Church and worked as an assistant pastor at Galilee Baptist Church. Beyond the church walls, A. L. contributed to the community through his employment at the Erlanger Medical Center, Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home, and Hamilton County Schools.
A. L. was a proud father to two daughters and is survived by multiple stepsons and numerous relatives, including his mother, siblings, and grandchildren. The aftermath of his passing left a substantial void in the lives of those who knew him, and his contributions to both the church and community echo in the memories of his loved ones.
His funeral services brought together friends and family who recognized the lasting influence he had on so many. The community came together on August 27, 2023, to celebrate Isaac’s life, showcasing the love and respect he commanded among his peers and church family.
As Chattanooga reflects on the contributions of Delores, A. L., and Isaac, there is a sense of unity in grief. Together, the community embraces the memories they left behind, recognizing the impact they had through education and faith-based activities. Now, as Chandeliers flicker in churches and memories linger in the hallways of schools, the spirit of these remarkable individuals continue to guide the community toward future growth and resilience.
