Chattanooga Scores Big with U.S. Department of Energy Funding for Clean Energy Projects
Chattanooga, known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant community, just received a major boost towards becoming an even more sustainable city. On September 10, 2024, at 9:00 p.m., it was officially announced that Chattanooga, along with a dozen other locations across the United States, will receive a slice of the significant $31 million funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. This funding aims to support clean energy projects particularly in disadvantaged communities.
The city’s grant, amounting to $2.9 million, was awarded under the Communities Sparking Investment in Transformative Energy initiative. The grant recognizes and encourages Chattanooga’s climate action plan and the concerted efforts of the Chattanooga Housing Authority. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly expressed his gratitude in a statement released by the Department of Energy. “The James A. Henry building was already going to operate as a health clinic and early childhood education center for the people of the Westside, and now it will also be an energy-efficient resilience hub,” said Mayor Kelly.
A Community Resilience Hub in the Making
The funding will be used to renovate and expand a previously closed school, creating a community resilience hub. This hub will provide essential employment services and incorporate various energy-efficient measures such as roof insulation, high-performance windows, LED lighting, and an efficient chiller. The hub will cater primarily to the residents of the Westside, proving to be a valuable resource in terms of employment and energy savings.
“I want to thank the Department of Energy for recognizing the need for investment on the Westside,” added Mayor Kelly. This endeavor is all set to bring multiple benefits including reduced energy costs, improved air quality, and an overall improved quality of life for the community.
Nationwide Initiative for Broader Impact
This grant program aims to incite investments across various communities, delivering economic and environmental benefits. Selected communities such as Chattanooga are investing in a broad spectrum of clean energy approaches. These include building efficiency and electrification, clean transportation, energy infrastructure upgrades, microgrid development and deployment, renewable energy, and workforce development. These developments are poised to create jobs, increase resilience, and stimulate economic opportunities in places that have historically been overlooked by federal programs.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm highlighted the purpose and impact of these grants. “These grants will reduce energy costs, increase resilience, and create jobs and economic opportunity in places that have historically been left behind by federal programs,” she said.
In addition to the grant, each selected community will also receive a Community Energy Fellow. This DOE-sponsored clean energy professional will be stationed in the host community for 18 months to help build capacity and support the project’s outcomes. This ensures that the initiatives have the necessary expertise and sustainability to see them through to success.
