Chattanooga State Community College Elects New Dean of Humanities & Fine Arts
Dr. Charmayne Mulligan to Lead the Humanities & Fine Arts Department
Lifelong learner and experienced educator Dr. Charmayne Mulligan has been announced as the new Dean of Humanities & Fine Arts at Chattanooga State Community College, according to a statement released by the institution.
A Track Record of Excellence in Education
Dr. Mulligan comes with more than two decades of experience across higher education, nonprofit management, and journalism. Prior to coming on board at the Chattanooga-based educational institution, she spent 17 fruitful years at Davenport University. There, her roles spanned department chair in English and Communications and a respected faculty member. She went on to receive the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus in 2023. Earlier in her career, she also imparted her knowledge at ITT Technical Institute as an instructor.
Commitment to Student Success
In addition to her illustrious career path, Dr. Mulligan has been noted for her commitment to student success. She firmly believes in mentoring students and aiding them in discovering their passions. As she declared, “I really enjoy the mentoring process: working with students, helping them discover their passions and their joys, and guiding them on their career paths.”
She indicated that in her new role at Chattanooga State, she looks forward to reinforcing the mission of the Humanities and Fine Arts faculty as they strive for ever greater student success and advancement of the institution. She added that she aims to bolster the faculty’s efforts in the development and implementation of Open Educational Resources.
Supporting the Faculty for Greater Impact
Dr. Mulligan recognizes the importance of faculty support for achieving institutional goals, stating, “The best ideas often come from the faculty. My role will be to support those ideas, helping them get approved, and finding the resources necessary for achieving those strategies and goals.”
Looking Ahead
As the new dean, Dr. Mulligan, who holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Florida Atlantic University, a master’s degree in English from East Tennessee State University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Western Michigan University, remains committed to helping students realize their dreams through education.
ChattState President Dr. Rebecca Ashford stated, “Dr. Mulligan’s proven track record in higher education and her commitment to student success will benefit both the Humanities & Fine Arts division and the college as a whole. Her innovative leadership and passion for education will undoubtedly enhance the Humanities & Fine Arts division and contribute to our college’s continued excellence.”
