Chattanooga, Tennessee – In a heated contest that spanned from the scenic Lookout Valley to the breathtaking Flat Top Mountain, Republican Michele Reneau emerged victorious Tuesday night, defeating Democrat and former school board member Kathy Lennon to represent District 27 in the Tennessee House of Representatives. This win marks a significant step for Reneau as she prepares to step into her new role as a freshman lawmaker, following a hard-fought primary battle against incumbent Patsy Hazlewood.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the voters and to my supporters who helped me to get to where I’m at tonight,” Reneau shared during her election night celebration at Chattanooga’s downtown Westin hotel. With a beaming smile, she expressed her enthusiasm for the journey ahead, emphasizing her commitment not just to herself but to all residents of Tennessee. “I’m excited for the future,” she added, hinting at a vision filled with conservative values she hopes to bring to the State Capitol.
The campaign leading up to the election was anything but quiet. Reneau, who notably ousted Hazlewood in the Republican primary back in August, positioned herself as a challenger to the status quo, particularly questioning Hazlewood’s voting records on critical issues like immigration. Her campaign signage didn’t shy away from stirring emotions—pointing fingers at the incumbent’s positions and drawing critical attention.
The general election brought its own set of challenges as Hamilton County Democrats responded to Reneau’s campaign tactics by funding signs that criticized her stance on federal funding. With the political atmopshere heating up, the fundraising battle swung back and forth, with Reneau ultimately raising $173,000 and spending $112,000. Kathy Lennon raised $108,000 and spent $84,600, drawing closer to Reneau in the final stretch.
Despite her loss, Lennon exemplified grace, congratulating Reneau and expressing her hopes for effective leadership. “We need a good leader for District 27 in Nashville,” she said, reflecting on her own campaign experience as an “amazing ride,” while also acknowledging her disappointment. “I worked hard, had so much support, and I’m so thankful for everyone who volunteered.”
Michele Reneau, at 47 years old, is no stranger to hard work; she has made Hamilton County her home for the past 15 years along with her husband and five children. Originally hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, Reneau holds degrees in political science and public administration. Her professional background includes real estate, and she has passionately advocated for local farmers.
Reneau’s conservative stance includes a strong focus on tackling illegal immigration, aiming to collaborate with law enforcement and federal agents to effectively address the issue. She’s also made clear her opposition to abortion and does not foresee any changes to existing laws surrounding reproductive health. As for the contentious issue of gun control, she believes existing legislation should be adequately enforced, leaving little room for new laws.
On the other side of the aisle is 69-year-old Kathy Lennon, a lifelong Chattanooga resident and a moderate Democrat. Lennon, who has a rich background as a theology educator and experience on the Hamilton County school board since 2016, dedicated her career to education and community service. She expressed her commitment to progressive causes like gun control and reproductive rights and is likely to maintain her involvement in community advocacy.
As the local community gears up for the start of the Tennessee General Assembly on January 14, 2025, all eyes will be on Michele Reneau as she steps into her role as a state lawmaker, representing her district with vigor and fresh energy. Whether you support her or not, one thing is for sure—the political landscape in Tennessee is anything but dull.
