The Chattanooga Theatre Centre is set to conclude its landmark 100th season with the charmingly heartwarming and lavishly glamorous Broadway classic – “La Cage Aux Folles.” The show is scheduled to run from July 14th till August 4th, taking center stage in the Mainstage Theatre.
“La Cage Aux Folles” is a melodious extravaganza that pays tribute to the delight of accepting ourselves and our loved ones for who we truly are. Written by Harvey Fierstein, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, the 1983 musical draws inspiration from the 1973 French play of the same name.
The story is centered on Georges, the manager of a drag club located in Saint-Tropez, where his partner of two decades, Albin, is the star performer, ZaZa. The plot thickens when Georges’ son, Jean-Michel divulges his plans to marry the daughter of a conservative politician. Georges, in an attempt to shield their relationship and idiosyncrasies, plans a facade. However, Albin has different plans which promise humor and high drama!
Audiences may draw parallels from the widely popular, Robin Williams, and Nathan Lane starrer, “The Birdcage,” that was also based on the same French play from 1973.
Since its debut at the Palace Theatre in 1983, “La Cage Aux Folles” has a rich history of entertaining audiences. The show’s victory at the 1984 Tony for Best Musical, and its subsequent successful revivals on Broadway further testify its enduring appeal. The central theme of the show, embodied in the show-stopping number “I Am What I Am,” has earned recognition as an LGBTQ+ anthem over decades.
“La Cage Aux Folles” is not merely a show, but a grand celebration that brings together elements of romance, comedy, family dynamics, and foot-tapping music accompanied by glittery, glamorous dance performances.
Ensuring the dazzle and grandeur of “La Cage Aux Folles,” a talented production team has been brought together under the leadership of Director Magge Cabrera-Hudgins. The team includes esteemed members like Musical Director Vincent Hale, Choreographer Lindsay Fussell, Scenic Designer Sarah Miecielica, Costume Designer Randy Forester, and Light Designer Scott Dunlap. The stage management is held by MegAnn Brotzman with Christiana Russell taking on the role of the Assistant Stage Manager.
Striking performances are anticipated from the accomplished cast including Jason Russell as Georges; John Thomas McCecil as Albin/Zaza; Tae Brasel as John-Michel; and Anna Pyron as Anne, amogn others.
