Chattanooga residents experienced a very wild Sunday as the skies opened up with a nasty storm that swept through the area, causing all sorts of disruptions. It’s hard to believe that just days ago, we were basking in warm temperatures that reached a balmy 87 degrees. However, this storm is set to change everything. The Chattanooga Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit is reaching out to help locate a young woman named Alexas Pump, who is just 18 years old. She was reported missing after leaving home around 12:40 p.m. on the stormy Sunday. It’s important for everyone to stay vigilant and keep an eye out for her well-being.
As crews from EPB jumped into action, they had their hands full dealing with issues like downed trees and power lines due to the intense winds and striking lightning that accompanied the storm. Reports of significant damage rolled in from surrounding counties like Jackson, Marion, and Grundy, where multiple trees were uprooted, leaving homeowners to assess the aftermath.
For one local resident, Claudia Broom, the storm delivered a real shocker. She discovered that a cedar tree had crashed down in her backyard, blocking access to her home. Luckily, she felt relieved that it missed hitting her house entirely. She hadn’t even heard the thunderous fall, finding the mess only when she stepped outside to check on things in her neighborhood on 6th Avenue.
Throughout this chaotic weather event, Chattanooga has been under a tornado watch. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported in Tennessee, although the situation elsewhere turned tragic with a total of 34 deaths reported across the nation due to these severe storms. This stark reminder of the power of nature keeps us on our toes as we navigate the changing weather.
As the severe weather alert remains in place, there’s still potential for more strong storms to roll through overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Residents should brace for damaging winds and even the possibility of isolated tornadoes. By Monday afternoon, however, the forecast is looking a little brighter with showers and storms expected to taper off, allowing temperatures to hover around a pleasant 70 degrees.
