Have you ever felt like your voice wasn’t being heard? That’s the reality for many folks living right here in Tennessee. For years, people have been feeling the brunt of government that just doesn’t seem to care about their needs and struggles. It’s no secret that the Republican supermajority in Nashville has been ruling the state without much consideration for the average Tennessean. Unfortunately, this has left Tennessee ranked among the worst states when it comes to living conditions, with issues ranging from high poverty rates to poor voter turnout and beyond. But, there’s good news on the horizon!
Why do people feel so frustrated? Well, let’s break it down a bit. Tennessee has some of the highest poverty rates in the country, and our beloved state holds the title for the worst voter turnout nationally. It’s also alarming that we have the second highest inflation rate in the U.S., along with many residents lacking health insurance. To add to this dire situation, the shooting death rate in Tennessee is a staggering 50 percent higher than the national average. It’s clear that we need a new direction and some fresh faces in our state government.
Enter Allison Gorman and Kathy Lennon, two passionate women from Chattanooga who are stepping up to the plate and running for seats in the Tennessee State House. Gorman, a journalist and mother of three, is vying for the seat in Tennessee House District 26. On the other hand, Lennon is a dedicated teacher and former school board member, running for Tennessee House District 27. Both women are committed to making a meaningful impact in our state.
So, what are Gorman and Lennon all about? For starters, they believe every child in Tennessee deserves a quality education. They’ve pledged to fully fund public schools so that education is accessible to all. Isn’t that what we all want? They also want to create a fair economy that works for hardworking Tennesseans—not just for the wealthy elites that have been favored by the current GOP leadership.
Both candidates are advocates for expanding healthcare in Tennessee. It’s worth noting that while many states have expanded Medicaid eligibility, our Republican representatives have stubbornly resisted this change. Gorman and Lennon support common-sense gun laws and sensible abortion policies that reflect what many citizens agree upon but are largely ignored by the current leadership. Isn’t it time someone in Nashville actually listened to what the people want?
Facing off against them are incumbents who are more interested in pushing extreme agendas than addressing real issues. Gorman’s opponent, Greg Martin, has supported arming schoolteachers and handing huge tax breaks to property-rich corporations. Meanwhile, Kathy Lennon is up against Michele Reneau, who has shown a tendency toward extremist views that don’t reflect the needs of our communities.
Tennessee used to thrive with a mix of Republican and Democratic lawmakers, but since the 2010 election, the state has tiptoed into a de-facto one-party rule. This has taken a toll on the people of Tennessee, and it’s time to change that. We have the power— a responsibility—to bring balance back to our local government.
Let’s create a path towards change, starting with the upcoming elections. If you reside in District 26, remember to cast your vote for Allison Gorman. And for those in District 27, be sure to support Kathy Lennon. Together, we can steer Tennessee toward a brighter future.
November 5 is a day that can change the course of our history. Let’s come together as informed citizens and actively participate in our democracy. Your voice matters, and it’s time to let it be heard!
