Chattanooga Women’s Basketball Team Secures Dominant Victory Over North Carolina Central

Chattanooga Women’s Basketball Team Dominates North Carolina Central

Chattanooga, TN – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team celebrated a decisive victory on Monday night, achieving their second win of the season and the first against a Division I opponent by defeating North Carolina Central 75-36. The match, held in Durham, North Carolina, showcased the Mocs’ strength and strategy, leaving little doubt about their performance.

A Strong Start Sets the Tone

The Mocs (2-1) kicked off the game with a stunning 16-1 run, establishing a commanding lead early on. From that point forward, they never looked back. This match marked UTC’s first win by over 30 points against a Division I team since February 17, 2018, when they triumphed over Wofford 76-46. Additionally, it was the Mocs’ first win by 35 points or more since an incredible 85-41 victory against Western Carolina during the first round of the Southern Conference tournament in 2017.

Impressive Statistics

Throughout the game, the Mocs demonstrated remarkable efficiency, shooting 59% from the field. They capitalized on their opponents’ mistakes, converting 24 turnovers from North Carolina Central into an impressive 27 points. However, there were aspects to improve upon, as UTC itself committed 22 turnovers, marking the second consecutive game where they turned the ball over 20 times. In their previous game against Shorter, they had 18 turnovers.

Contributions from All Players

UTC’s head coach, Deandra Schirmer, ensured that every player on the roster saw game time, with all scoring at least once, including freshman Maza Buzic, who is likely to redshirt this season. Gianni Corbitt led the scoring with 12 points, nailing both of her 3-point attempts. Sigrun Olafsdottir had a standout performance that nearly resulted in a triple-double, finishing the game with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. She, like Corbitt, made an impressive 4-of-6 shots and also contributed with two 3-pointers.

Several players joined Corbitt and Olafsdottir in scoring, with Caia Elisaldez, Frode Flos van der Schans, and Ava Card all contributing 8 points each. Notably, Elisaldez also recorded five assists, while van der Schans achieved her production in just six minutes on the court, showcasing the depth of talent on the Mocs’ roster.

Looking Ahead

After this resounding victory, the Mocs will return home to face Troy on Thursday at 6 PM. This game will be the first of a doubleheader at McKenzie Arena, with the men’s team set to host Morehead State following the women’s matchup. With a strong showing against North Carolina Central, the Mocs will aim to build upon their momentum and continue their winning ways.
