Chattanooga Writers’ Guild Celebrates September Contest Winners

Chattanooga Writers’ Guild Announces Monthly Contest Winners

Chattanooga, TN is buzzing with creativity this month as we celebrate the remarkable talents of local writers! The Chattanooga Writers’ Guild hosted its Monthly Contest for September 2024, and we’re thrilled to share the exciting results.

And the Winner Is…

Drumroll, please! The winner of this month’s contest is Isla Wilson with her captivating submission titled “Spectre”. This piece dives deep into the feelings and experiences surrounding the idea of the supernatural. Isla’s writing evokes a sense of mystery and introspection about what ghosts truly represent in our lives.

Claiming the runner-up spot is the talented Sue Carol Elvin with her engaging entry “Cabin Fever”, which tells the whimsical tale of her adventures in searching for the perfect cabin getaway. Both entries brought unique perspectives to the contest, and we are excited to spotlight them!

Non-Fiction Category and A Special Thank You

This month, the non-fiction category focused on the intriguing theme “Yell(ow)”. A special shoutout goes to our non-fiction judge, Sherry Poff, whose expertise helped bring this contest to life.

Unpacking “Spectre”

Isla Wilson’s winning piece, “Spectre”, is a thoughtful exploration of the phenomenon surrounding ghosts. She glides through her skepticism and fears, sharing how the chilling sounds and shadows in her house have stirred both questions and reflections on the supernatural. She beautifully weaves her personal experiences, touching upon eerie moments such as hearing her name called in silence or feeling an unsettling presence.

Isla raises some fascinating points about how mold, electromagnetic fields, and even sleep paralysis can contribute to these mystical encounters, challenging the reader to delve deeper into what they believe about the uncanny. Through vivid descriptions and heartfelt emotions, she brings us along her journey of questioning the reality of what we cannot see or touch.

“Cabin Fever”: An Adventure in the Woods

On the flip side, Sue Carol Elvin’s “Cabin Fever” offers a cheerful narrative of the adventures she and her husband, Peter, undertake in search of a cozy log cabin in the mountains of northwest Georgia. What starts off as a casual trip takes an exciting turn when they decide to consider purchasing a cabin, which leads them on an unexpected journey filled with hasty decisions and unexpected surprises.

From encounters with enthusiastic real estate agents to the realization that not every property fits the vision of a “dream cabin,” Sue Carol’s story is laced with humor, charm, and those delightful “what were we thinking?” moments. Her writing captures the spirit of adventure, blended with the inevitability of life’s quirks, making this a delightful read for anyone who has ever imagined their dream home in nature.
