Many parents, like Maleeha Mubashiruddin, who has children in CPS, are worried about the lack of communication from Mayor Brandon Johnson regarding these future appointments. “Why is this happening when we’re so close to having part of our board be elected?” she questioned, voicing the anxiety shared by many in the community.

With the school board revision scheduled to take effect soon, parents are increasingly anxious about having no clear leadership in place during such a critical time for the district. “We don’t know who Mayor Johnson is going to appoint…there needs to be someone leading this giant district,” Mubashiruddin added.

Potential Changes on the Horizon

This situation opens the door for Johnson to select individuals who align with his educational policies while potentially sidelining current CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. There are significant agenda items that have faced resistance, including securing funding to cover budget gaps and finalizing contracts with the Chicago Teachers Union. A reshaped Board of Education could also signal the dismissal of Martinez, although any move to do so could come with legal challenges, given his employment agreement.

The Illinois Government has established a deadline for Johnson to appoint 11 new board members by December 16 for the upcoming term. Notably, the process for filling these vacancies varies greatly across state school districts. CPS has different rules that grant the mayor definitive control over new board appointments, unlike most districts that require a vote on applications from the public.

Leadership Void and Its Impact

Experts are expressing concerns about the implications of lacking a full board. Julie Corbett, a school district consultant, pointed out that while basic operations may continue, crucial decisions regarding educational policy and budgeting won’t be effectively made without a quorum. If a majority of four board members isn’t present for the upcoming meeting on October 24, the board won’t be able to vote on any critical district matters. The situation has raised questions on how CPS will manage its business if these vacancies aren’t addressed in a timely manner.

The reaction from CPS has been somewhat muted, as officials have expressed gratitude to the board members for their service, without providing clear answers regarding the next steps in leadership. Many parents, however, find this lack of communication troubling.

The mass resignations may also influence future elections for the board. This situation might discourage potential candidates from stepping forward out of fear of instability. Candidate Kate Doyle commented on the rising apprehension among parents about the political motivations behind these resignations and the implications for student stability moving forward.

There’s a growing demand from parents for transparency about the future direction of the CPS. Paul Wargaski, a parent and organizer for CPS Parents for Buses, described the resignations as puzzling and alarming. “What does this do other than create instability for the students in Chicago?” he asked. Wargaski, like many others, seeks clarity around the motives behind the recent decisions made by the current board members.
