A shooting incident in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of South Side, Chicago, resulted in fatalities and casualties, according to local police. The incident occurred early Thursday morning, leaving three people dead and two children critically wounded.
Deputy Chief Don Jerome illustrated the morning’s event, stating that their team responded to an alert of shots fired within the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue around 6:15 AM. Upon arrival, they found five individuals – two women and three children – shot.
Reports suggest that two cars had driven into the area, and several people alighted from the vehicles. These individuals fired shots from a rifle and a handgun at a residential property before fleeing the scene. No suspects are currently in police custody.
The victims were identified as two women and one child, who all tragically lost their lives. The deceased women were identified as 24-year-old Capri Edwards and 45-year-old Nakeeshia Strong. An 8-year-old boy was also confirmed dead. Two other children, aged five and eight, sustained critical injuries. All victims were given immediate first aid by the officers at the scene before they were transferred to various hospitals.
Edwards was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. Strong lost her life at the scene of the shooting. The three children were transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in a critical condition. Unfortunately, one of the 8-year-old boys died, leaving a 5-year-old and another 8-year-old undergoing treatment.
Markita Scott, the mother of Capri Edwards, shared her grief with the media, expressing that she was numb and hoping for justice for her daughter who she revealed died while trying to protect her children. Detectives are currently investigating the incident, which is believed to have stemmed from a personal dispute.
Local leaders were quick to respond to the tragedy. Alderman Desmon Yancy publicly called for an end to the violence, expressing hope that this will be the last incident of its kind. As the investigation continues, the public is being urged to provide any information they might have regarding the incident to help police in their ongoing investigation.
