Chattanooga’s Day of Caring Unites Over 900 Volunteers for Community Improvement

Chattanooga Celebrates Community Spirit with the Day of Caring

Chattanooga, Tennessee – On a beautiful Friday, the United Way of Greater Chattanooga hosted its much-anticipated annual Day of Caring at Reflection Riding. This event marks a special occasion where volunteers from all walks of life come together to enhance local public spaces and, more importantly, strengthen community bonds.

A Day of Connection and Service

“Today, Reflection Riding is a part of United Way’s Day of Caring,” shared Terran Anderson, Vice President of Community & Corporate Engagement at United Way. Excitement was palpable as Anderson mentioned this year was particularly special, stating, “We have been doing this for decades across the community, but we are so excited because today is the largest Day of Caring we have ever had.”

With the help of various corporate partners, volunteers were able to complete an impressive array of work throughout the day. “We are always trying to connect community members to what our nonprofit community is doing. Whether it be UTC students, individuals, or friends from our corporate partners, we want them to see the great work that nonprofits are doing in our community,” Anderson continued. “This is one of the easiest ways to bring them to that work so that they can experience it firsthand.”

Making a Difference Together

According to United Way, over 900 volunteers took part in this remarkable event, completing 60 projects throughout Chattanooga. This staggering number demonstrates the community’s commitment to improving local spaces and supporting one another.

One of the corporate participants, John Rutter from Ace Hardware, expressed why the Day of Caring holds a special place in the hearts of many. “For 20 years, we have partnered with United Way,” Rutter explained. “During Labor Day, we actually donate 5% of our sales to United Way. This year, we are glad to say that we can donate over $29,000 to help with supplies for projects across the city.”

Rutter emphasized that the Day of Caring is not only about corporate partnerships but also about teamwork and collaboration. “We are really glad that we have the opportunity to help. Today, we put up some shade cloths which we have at our garden centers. To take some of the skills we have from our stores and share that with the community is really special to us.”

Volunteers Bring Skills and Heart

As volunteers rolled up their sleeves, the atmosphere buzzed with energy and enthusiasm. Each project was tackled with creativity and teamwork, as individuals from diverse backgrounds joined forces to uplift their community. Whether planting gardens, repainting benches, or even clearing walking trails, the sense of purpose was evident in every smile and laugh.
