This week, the city of Chattanooga was hit with heartbreaking news as it bids farewell to one of its beloved residents, Diane Patton Bookout, who passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Diane was a true fixture in the Chattanooga community, and her absence will surely be felt by all who knew and loved her.
Diane was born on February 26, 1932, and spent her entire life in the charming city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was raised by her parents, John Patton and Mary Elizabeth Hensley Patton, who instilled in her the values of hard work and community spirit. Diane graduated from Tyner High School in 1950, ready to set out and make her mark on the world.
For 42 years, Diane was not just the wife of Chester May Bookout but also the Chief Financial Officer of his business, Central Plumbing Company. Together, they created a legacy of family and service that touched many lives. Their marriage spanned an incredible 64 years, a testament to their enduring love and commitment to one another. Sadly, both Chester and their son, Timothy Herrell Bookout, preceded her in death.
Diane was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a shining star in the Chattanooga community. She was an active member of Concord Baptist Church, where she participated in various activities that benefited both the church and those in need. Her warm heart and generous spirit made her a trusted friend and confidante to many.
In her spare time, Diane pursued several hobbies that brought her joy and creativity. She had a knack for antiquing, often searching for hidden treasures in local shops. Additionally, she loved crocheting and sewing, skills that she proudly imparted to her family. Music was another great passion of hers; Diane played the piano and took immense joy in encouraging her grandson, Elijah Byrns, in his pursuit of becoming a concert pianist.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Byrns, and her grandson, Elijah, who were both incredibly close to her and will continue to carry on her legacy. Diane’s family meant the world to her, and she always made it a point to inspire them in their dreams and ambitions.
Friends and family are invited to pay their final respects during the graveside and interment services scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, at 11 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery. This will be a time for the community to gather and celebrate the remarkable life Diane led and the many lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, Diane’s family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hearth Hospice, located at 121 Battlefield Crossing Court, Ringgold, Georgia 30736. This thoughtful gesture not only honors her legacy but also helps others in their time of need.
Diane Patton Bookout will always be remembered as a loving mother, a dedicated community leader, and a cherished friend. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
