Insights from the Second Evening of the Democratic National Convention

An Electrifying Night

Barack and Michelle Obama gave riveting speeches at the Democratic National Convention this Tuesday. Their words took strong aim at Republican nominee Donald Trump, urging citizens to refuse him now more than ever. The Democrats made a concerted effort during the night to present Harris’ personal side to Americans still learning about her, just under a month after she ascended to the top of the party’s 2024 ticket. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff presented an affectionate narrative of their relationship, and why his kids fondly call the vice president “Momala.” It has set the stage for the two closing nights of the convention, where the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will take to the stage on Wednesday. Harris will close the gathering on Thursday, marking the final dash toward Election Day.

‘Kids with Funny Names’

Twenty years post his breakthrough 2004 DNC speech, Barack Obama gave an impressive closing speech, his words touching upon familiar themes from his own campaigns. The former president’s message ended up garnering a lot of attention and goodwill, primarily because of his personal popularity among American voters. Tuesday night witnessed an hourlong, prime-time musical extravaganza, with a song associated with each state, and representatives from the states delivered short speeches as they cast their delegates’ votes for the vice president. It was an hour of music and positive vibes with no actual consequence. The event ended with Democrats cutting from the roll call to a live video of Harris and Walz stepping onto the stage in Milwaukee, where they held a rally on Tuesday night.
