Downtown Chattanooga Engulfed by Smoke from Massive Scrap Yard Fire

Chattanooga, Tennessee – On Tuesday afternoon, a raging fire erupted at a scrap metal recycling center located near downtown Chattanooga, consuming multiple piles of scrap metal and shrouding the city’s skyline in a heavy cloud of smoke.

Firefighter Injured in Line of Duty

The Chattanooga Fire Department swiftly responded to the scene, trying to control the growing blaze. Tragically, one firefighter got heat-related injuries while combating the fire, specifically while on a ladder. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment. Thankfully, the firefighter has since been discharged from the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

PSC Metals: The Fire Epicenter

The fire broke out at PSC Metals, a widely known scrap metal recycling facility located on W. 19th Street, close to Riverfront Parkway. According to the Chattanooga Fire Department, the fire predominantly consumed piles of scrap metal, sparing the buildings in the vicinity.

Public Safety Alert Issued

Shortly after the call regarding the fire came in around 2 p.m. local time, a public safety alert was issued to all residents in the Chattanooga area. The alert notified the local communities of the situation and advised minimizing exposure to smoke by staying indoors, closing windows and doors, and turning on air conditioning if available.

Local Authorities Respond

Multiple local authorities were engaged in handling the situation and ensuring citizen’s safety. The Hamilton County Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) were on standby ready to provide necessary medical aid. These first responders played a crucial role in the swift transportation of the injured firefighter to the hospital.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of environmental damage from the smoke. Crews continue monitoring the area and working towards clearing the smoke. However, complete recovery from the incident may take weeks or even months, considering the magnitude of the fire.

Updates on the situation will be provided as they arise. Meanwhile, residents have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid exposition, and prioritize their health and safety during this challenging time.
