Beloved Community Figure and U.S. Army Veteran, Dwight Stephen Carter Passes

Beloved community figure, staunch Tennessee advocate, and U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Dwight Stephen Carter, 76, passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His profound sense of duty, unwavering loyalty, and extraordinary compassion will be greatly missed by the community at large.

Military Service and Career

A 1966 Central High School graduate in Nashville, Dwight attended Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) before joining the U.S. Army Reserve. With an impressive two-decade tenure, he rose to the ranks of a master sergeant, serving with the 401st MP Camp in Nashville and later with the 3397th U.S. Army Garrison in Chattanooga. His distinguished military career, which included roles as an Assistant Operations Sergeant and Military Police Operations Sergeant, culminated with his service in Operation Desert Storm.

Following his exemplary military service, Dwight contributed significantly to the retail and business industries. His career encompassed roles as store manager at Gilman Paint, Duron Paint, assistant manager at K-Mart, and the paint department manager at Home Depot, from which he retired after 20 years of dedicated service.

Community Contribution and Personal Legacy

Considered an intrinsic part of the Chattanooga community, Dwight was known as an avid, unwavering Tennessee fan. With an athletic background, he had a special fondness for football, basketball, and baseball. The latter became a favorite given his sons’ participation in the sport. He spent countless summers coaching their baseball teams and enthusiastically attended their games, whether it was summer ball, high school, or college ball.

Dwight’s devotion extended beyond his immediate family to his grandchildren. He would often spend considerable time locating the perfect Christmas toy for them, demonstrating his deep, unwavering love for his grandchildren. Inspite of health challenges in recent years, he strived to stay involved in their sporting achievements, often engaging them in proud discussions of their triumphs.

Survivors And Funeral Services

Dwight was predeceased by his parents, Reuben Franklin and Frances Novelene Shelton Carter. He is survived by his wife, Martha Joan Phillips Carter; three sons, Brian (Bridget) Carter of Nolensville, TN, Glen (Lindsey) Carter of Chattanooga, Jeffery (Allison) Carter of Nolensville, ten grandchildren and a great grandson. His sister, Janice G. Love of Muskegon, MI, three nieces, a nephew, and many cousins also survive him.
