Sponsor Our ArticlesEast Ridge City Council has approved several community projects, including a new YMCA branch at Camp Jordan Park. These initiatives aim to enhance local recreation, road improvements, diversity in governance, and cybersecurity measures. The developments signal a promising future for East Ridge, with a new town center also on the horizon.
Big things are on the horizon for the friendly city of East Ridge, as the City Council has recently given the green light for a series of new community projects, including the potential construction of a brand-new branch of the YMCA at the scenic Camp Jordan Park. This decision came after an enthusiastic and unanimous vote from the city council members, who are clearly excited about the possibilities this new facility could bring!
To kick things off, the city will be partnering with Triangle 2 Solutions to conduct feasibility studies. These studies aim to gather all the important data on how well a new YMCA branch could serve the community. They will dive into figuring out who would make use of the facility, what percentage of people might sign up for memberships, and what programs and activities residents are itching to take part in. It will also examine how this new facility would stack up against other services already available in the area.
Currently, there are eight existing YMCA branches scattered throughout the greater Chattanooga area. It’s worth noting that the typical YMCA member tends to live within a 10-15 minute drive from their chosen branch. The best part? Members from any of the branches can enjoy all the amenities at any other branch, plus there’s a nice reciprocal arrangement with out-of-town branches, allowing for even more access.
In a bid to create a more engaged and diverse local government, the East Ridge City Council discussed and passed a motion that limits individuals to one board position at a time. This means that no single person can serve on more than one city board, including the council itself. This change is aimed at ensuring a broader range of voices and ideas are represented in city governance.
In other council news, the retired city manager Scott Miller, who stepped back into the role in 2023, has had his contract renewed until January 2025. Miller seems to be quite content with his responsibilities and looks forward to continuing to contribute on a year-to-year basis. He’ll also see a nice bump in his pay, with a planned three percent cost of living raise and an additional one percent for performance merit.
East Ridge is not just focusing on recreation but also road improvements! The Chattanooga Metropolitan Planning Organization has invited East Ridge to apply for a Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) grant to spur some much-needed upgrades. Scruggs Road, stretching from Ringgold Road to the Georgia state line, has been prioritized for reconstruction, with the estimated costs around $523,238. The East Ridge City Council has stepped up to cover 20 percent of that, translating to a commitment of around $104,647 from the city’s budget.
But that’s not all! The city also plans to secure a $2,000 Cyber Security Grant for 2025, which will allow for thorough scans of the city’s network infrastructure. This is crucial, as it will provide peace of mind against potential cyber threats while ensuring that at least $4,000 is invested upfront.
Over in the realm of recreation, the East Ridge parks and recreation department is extending its partnership with D-BAT for an additional year, promising free clinics and discounts for local baseball and softball enthusiasts. Plus, keep an eye out for new recreational activities including open pickleball play at the community center!
Finally, the city is excited to share that plans are moving forward for a new town center complex to be built behind the East Ridge City Hall. Designed by top-notch architects, this facility is budgeted at up to $6 million and spans a whopping 12,000 square feet. It’s designed to be a bustling hub for community events, local gatherings, and much more, all aimed at boosting economic growth and enhancing the charm of East Ridge.
With all these developments in the works, it is clear that East Ridge is gearing up for some exciting times ahead. Keep your eyes peeled for this blossoming community!
