Tragic Tunnel Crash in East Ridge Claims Three Lives

In what can only be described as a devastating accident, the quiet city of East Ridge was shaken by a terrible crash that took place on the morning of December 14. A single-car accident occurred on the westbound side of the Bachman Tunnel, and unfortunately, it resulted in the tragic loss of three lives.

The individuals who lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident have been identified as Kimberlyn Lopez Gallard, 29 years old; Alexandra Vera, 24 years old; and Edguar Medina, believed to be in his early to mid-20s. It is a solemn reminder of how fragile life can be, and our hearts go out to the families and friends affected by this tragedy.

Driver Arrested

The driver of the vehicle, Yerson Ysaac Sanchez-Rivera, aged 24, initially fled the scene on foot but did not get far before authorities caught up with him. The repercussions of the incident have been severe, as Sanchez-Rivera, a Venezuelan national, has been charged with several serious offenses. These charges include three counts of vehicular homicide, three counts of duty to render aid, driving under the influence (DUI), as well as reckless driving and failure to maintain lane and exercise due care.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, Sanchez-Rivera admitted that he had consumed an entire 12-pack of beer before getting behind the wheel. He was driving at an alarming speed of 60-70 mph in a 40 mph zone, which clearly indicates a blatant disregard for safety. The conditions of the accident led to a substantial investigation, prompting a temporary closure of the tunnels on Ringgold Road while officials worked diligently to gather evidence and clear the scene.

Emergency response came swiftly, with the Chattanooga Police Department joining forces with the East Ridge Police and Fire Departments to tackle the aftermath of the crash. Residents and commuters were advised to find alternate routes during the investigation and cleanup, as the road became a focal point for authorities.

Current Legal Status

As it stands, Sanchez-Rivera is being held at the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center on a hefty bond of $270,000 and is set to appear in court on June 17, 2025. It is crucial for the community to stay updated as this case unfolds, as it involves serious implications for public safety and accountability.

Another Tragic Incident

On the heels of this tragic occurrence, it is worth noting that there was another unfortunate incident where a 20-year-old man lost his life in a wrong-way crash on I-75 at approximately 3:00 am. This separate accident involved a collision with a Dodge Ram, tragically leaving serious injuries for the other driver involved. These events bring to light the ever-present dangers on our roads and the urgent need for caution when driving.

As we reflect on these recent events, it’s essential to embrace a culture of responsibility and safety while driving. The loss felt by those impacted serves as a reminder that we can never take a moment for granted. Always remember to be vigilant and prioritize safety – you never know how it can change lives in an instant.
