Exciting Winter Activities Launch in Lookout Mountain, TN
Residents of Lookout Mountain, TN are in for a treat this winter with the addition of new activities to keep the little ones entertained during the chilly months. According to Jim Hailey, the Commissioner of Parks and Playgrounds, the gym at Lookout Mountain School will open its doors starting December 14. Families can enjoy access from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, with more days to be announced soon. Scott Shell will be on hand to oversee activities, ensuring everyone has a fun and safe experience.
For those wanting to stay updated on gym schedules, the town plans to post them on their official website at lookoutmtn.com and on the sports site bluesombrero.com.
Looking Ahead: Plans for Johnson Field
Speaking of activities, fans of Johnson Field should take note: the field will close until spring to protect its turf after football season wraps up next week. In positive news, Commissioner Hailey recently had the grass evaluated, and the results were better than expected!
Lookout Mountain School Celebrates Success
Big news is also coming from Lookout Mountain School, which just earned the prestigious title of being number eight out of the top ten schools in Tennessee. Principal Emily Haney shared exciting developments during the recent commission meeting, showcasing the school’s progress and the uptick in extracurricular activities like field trips and competitions. With 20 available seats for the Hamilton County school choice program next year, parents will want to stay tuned for updates, especially when exact numbers are confirmed in February.
Brush and Leaves, Oh My!
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department is busy tidying up the town. Commissioner William Valadez promised to have all leaves cleared in time for Christmas celebrations! Although the traditional evergreen tree across the highway sadly passed away this year, festive lights will still adorn the fountain and a large tree on West Brow Road.
Traffic Safety Initiatives: License Plate Readers Implementation
In a bid to enhance safety, Lookout Mountain has installed Flock license plate readers at every entry point into the town. These new systems are already proving to be a valuable asset. Just a few weeks ago, police caught a hit from the cameras for a stolen license plate, leading them to detain an individual connected to an organized motorcycle gang! Chief Dale Taylor remarked, “These LPRs allow us to monitor the sizable traffic influx—58,000 cars a month— and help us to stay alert to any suspicious activity.”
Increasing Police Presence in Local Hotspots
Residents are advised that police activity will increase near Sunset Rock, where issues have been reported again. If you see more patrols, now you know why!
Touching Tributes and Holiday Preparations
Lookout Mountain is also reflecting on lost leadership. Mayor Walker Jones paid tribute to the late Carol Mutter, the first female mayor of the town, who passed away last month. He described her as “quite a lady” whose presence and dedication to the community will be greatly missed.
To wrap up the festive season, the town will celebrate with a Christmas breakfast for employees on December 18 at the Golf Club. Residents are encouraged to contribute to a special fund that provides gifts for town staff as a gesture of appreciation.
Upcoming Meetings and News
Mark your calendars! The next commission meeting will take place on January 14 at 5 p.m., where more updates and planning will surely unfold.
