A fatal traffic crash early Tuesday morning involving a wrong-way driver on I-75 has left two people dead and a child seriously injured. Chattanooga Police responded to the incident at approximately 2:11 a.m., near the 580 Interstate 75 north exit.

According to the police, the crash involved multiple vehicles. The initial investigation by CPD’s Traffic Unit reveals that the driver of a Nissan Sentra, a 37-year-old woman, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate. She collided head-on with a Honda Accord, driven by a 65-year-old man, who was traveling in the correct direction.

The impact of the crash caused the Honda Accord to spin out and it was subsequently struck a second time by a tractor-trailer. Upon arrival, emergency responders from Chattanooga Fire and Hamilton County EMS found the two drivers and a child passenger with life-threatening injuries.

The drivers of both the Nissan Sentra and the Honda Accord were pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported the child, who was a passenger in the Nissan, to a local hospital. The child is reported to have life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured in the accident.

This information is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues. The authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the individuals involved in the crash.

The news of the tragic accident serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers posed by wrong-way driving. Authorities urge motorists to stay vigilant and adhere to traffic rules to prevent such tragic incidents.

Safety Precautions

With incidents like this, it’s important for drivers to remain cautious and alert while on the road. Some recommended precautions include:

  • Stay in the Right Lane: Wrong-way drivers typically drive in the left lane (their right lane), which is why staying in the right lane might help you avoid them.
  • Follow Traffic Signs: Always pay attention to and follow traffic signs, especially at interchanges.
  • Use Defensive Driving: Being aware of your surroundings and other drivers’ behaviors can help you react swiftly to unexpected situations.

What’s Next?

The CPD’s Traffic Unit will continue to investigate the crash. They will look into various aspects including why the Nissan Sentra was traveling in the wrong direction, and whether any external factors such as alcohol, drugs, or vehicle malfunction played a part in the accident.

As the investigation progresses, more details may be released to inform the public about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

This accident is a stark reminder of how crucial it is to practice safe driving habits, not just for one’s own safety but also for the safety of others on the road.
