In a federal court announcement, a 22-year-old man from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Christian Jacqi Williams has been sentenced to 75 months in federal prison for owning a device that turned his Glock Model 27 .40 caliber pistol into a machine gun.
Williams was apprehended in December 2021, after a heated chase ensued when he refused to stop for police. Instead, he raced off and ended in a collision.
Despite attempting to escape via the passenger side of the wrecked vehicle, Williams was quickly captured by officers. Upon his arrest, he was found to be in possession of fentanyl pills and a Glock Model 27 .40 caliber pistol enhanced with a converted machine gun switch.
This switch allowed the pistol to fire in fully automatic mode, discharging multiple rounds with a single trigger pull. Owning such a conversion device is considered illegal under Federal law.
The magnitude of Williams’ crime cannot be understated. According to the National Firearms Act, possession of a converted machine gun switch is classified under the same offence as owning an actual machine gun.
Besides the antagonizing vehicle chase and subsequent crash, Williams’ possession of fentanyl pills adds another layer to his illicit activities. This combination of drug possession and conversion of a firearm into a machine gun significantly increased the gravity of his offense, and ultimately his sentence.
With a total of 75 months of imprisonment imposed on Williams, he will likely be spending over six years behind bars. Upon completion of his sentence, he will then be placed on probation for the following three years.
This case serves to highlight the serious consequences of breaking federal laws pertaining to firearm modifications, and the inflexible stance against transforming any semi-automatic firearm into a machine gun. The rigorous sentencing also reflects the commitment of the federal justice system to curb illegal activities and promote public safety.
The judges ruling and this case as a whole, stand as a stark reminder of the real and severe repercussions awaiting those who dare to flout federal firearm laws.
