Chattanooga, TN – The highly esteemed Area 61 Gallery is inviting the public to its free monthly event ‘First Friday Open House’ this week between 6 and 8 pm. The artistic gathering allows visitors to mix and mingle with the local gallery artists and view the latest works fresh from their studios.
Recognized nationwide, ‘First Friday’ is a community event initially organized by various cities to promote networking events within neighborhoods and communities. The arts, particularly art galleries, quickly adopted the concept as a means to facilitate a community connection with local artists in their studios and via local gallery openings.
Chattanooga embraced the ‘First Friday’ concept in the year 2014 in alliance with the Association for Visual Arts (AVA). As a result, local galleries participate by staying open until early evening, hosting house events, or launching opening receptions for new exhibits.
Located at 721 Broad Street to the left of the Tivoli Theatre in the Maclellan Building, Area 61 Gallery hosts the work of over 30 local professional creators and advocates for art as a sustainable career. The gallery, run by owners Keeli and David Crewe, opens new featured artist exhibits during ‘First Friday’ events and takes it as a monthly opportunity to let the public know their artists and their unique work processes. It has been a platform for more than 30 local professional artists and craftsmen, promoting art as a viable career path.
The Featured Artist Show for June and July is “School’s Out For Summer” which presents new collage and paintings by local artist Mike Holsomback. The dynamic educator, artist, and professor of drawing and painting in the fine arts department at the Chattanooga State Community College is on a summer break and is using his time to express his creativity.
On the ‘First Fridays’ of each month, the gallery extends its operating hours from 6 pm to 8 pm, post the regular working hours from noon to 6 pm, Thursday through Monday. The extended hours provide art enthusiasts with more time to soak up the creative aura, interact with the artists, and socialize within the art-loving community.
If additional information is needed, the gallery’s website, area61gallery.com, is a useful resource to turn to.
