Frank Luther Hill, Jr.: A Legacy of Service and Dedication
Chattanooga, TN – The Chattanooga community mourns the passing of Frank Luther Hill, Jr., affectionately known by many as Springtime, Fessor, and Beetlejuice. Born on December 7, 1934, to Frank Nolan, Sr., and Viola C. Hill, Frank transitioned into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories and achievements.
A Life of Education and Leadership
Frank’s journey began in the Chattanooga public school system, from where he graduated as part of the Howard High School Class of 1952. Furthering his education, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Wilberforce University in Ohio and pursued additional studies at Tennessee State University in Nashville. Frank’s commitment to learning and growth led him to become a proud and resolute member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, to which he remained devoted until his health began to decline.
A Lifetime of Faithful Service
Frank was a faithful member of St. Paul A.M.E. Chattanooga, where he made significant contributions. He served as a trustee and Immediate Past President of the Local and East Tennessee Conference Lay Organizations. During his younger years, Frank held various roles in the church, including president of A.C.E. League, secretary of Sunday School, and delegate to the District and Connectional Conventions.
Contributions to Education
Frank’s dedication to education was evident through his work as a classroom teacher and principal at Hooker School until its closure in 1966. He then continued his role as an educator at Dade County Middle School in Trenton, where he dedicated his efforts until his retirement in the late 1980s.
Family and Cherished Memories
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Nolan Hill, Sr., and Viola C. Hill. He also outlived his ex-wife and the mother of his four children, Carrie Lee Copeland-Hill; his grandson Brian D. Mosley; and his great-granddaughter Saniah Hill. Those left to cherish his memories include his devoted companion and caregiver, Mary Louise Ervin, and his children: Ray A. Hill, Sr. and Tharyl Hill-Brown of Chattanooga; Frank L.N. Hill, III (Donna) of Hampton, Va.; and Vickie Hill of Murfreesboro. He also leaves behind bonus children, Michael Harden of Nashville, and Gerald and Ann Madden of Chattanooga, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
Public Viewing and Funeral Arrangements
The community will have the opportunity to pay their respects during a public viewing scheduled from 2-6 p.m. on Monday, September 23, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home. The Kappa Ceremony will commence at 5:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, September 24, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, located at 2514 Williams St., Chattanooga.
Other Recent Passings
Additionally, Chattanooga bids farewell to others who have recently passed. Maureen Patricia Downey Parr, 67, a dedicated operating room nurse, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2024. Debra Ann May, 70, formerly of Sears Automotive in Hixson, left us on Sunday, September 8, 2024. Lastly, Doyle L. Smith, born on June 18, 1938, in Roff, Oklahoma, went home to be with Jesus on September 8, 2024. He spent most of his life in Tennessee after moving from California in 1965.
Their legacies, much like Frank Luther Hill, Jr.’s, leave indelible marks on the hearts of many, reminding us of the profound impact individuals can have on their communities and beyond.
