Chattanooga’s Own Frank Pate Spreads Holiday Cheer Despite Personal Struggles
In the heart of Chattanooga, a remarkable man is turning his passion for photography into a bridge that connects people during the festive season. Meet Frank Pate, this week’s beacon of hope and warmth through the Pay It Forward initiative.
Braving the Cold
Early Saturday morning, the air was crisp and the streets were quiet, but not for long! Frank bundled up in his heavy coat, gloves, and beanie was out and about at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, spreading Christmas cheer in the most touching way. His task? Adorning tombstones with beautiful wreaths, ensuring that those who have passed are remembered this holiday season.
The Passion Behind the Camera
Many folk in Chattanooga know Frank as the local “Paparazzi.” Now, you might think that title comes with all the glitz and glam, but Frank’s work is all about giving back without any expectation of a reward. What makes this gentleman so special is that he captures moments from events around town purely out of love. From the emotional Blessing of the Buffalo to the proud Veteran’s Appreciation Day, Frank is there behind the lens—snapping photos and shooting videos to document the spirit of the community.
A Heart of Gold
Frank dedicates much of his time to a fantastic local charity known as the Forgotten Child Fund. This initiative is all about collecting toys for children in need during Christmas, ensuring that every kid can wake up on Christmas morning to find something under the tree, even if times are tough. His fellow volunteer, Christian Peek, couldn’t have said it better: “From the first time I met Frank, I knew he was one of the good ones.” Both men work tirelessly, with Frank taking part in the Forgotten Child Fund‘s cherished Santa Train each Christmas Eve. This wonderful event features an impressive lineup of first responders in firetrucks and police cars, delivering toys to excited children across the city.
Coping with Loss
This past year, however, has not been easy for Frank. He was a truck driver for West Side Transport but faced a tough layoff in September. Tragically, on December 16th, he lost his beloved wife, Tina, to cancer. With Christmas just a week away, Frank’s absence loomed over the festivities, leaving many to wonder if he would continue with his volunteer work.
Finding Strength in Giving
Chattanooga Police Sergeant David Young shared his concern for Frank, recognizing just how tough the holiday season can be after losing a loved one. “This time of year can be very dark,” Young notes. “Frank has those days.” There’s an undeniable gravity to Frank’s statement when he admits he’s uncertain if he can keep volunteering. But in moments like these, it’s also clear that he does find blessings in his life and appreciates the wonderful people around him.
A Community Unites
That’s where the beauty of the community shines through! The Pay It Forward initiative, sponsored by the McMahan Law Firm, continues to uplift individuals like Frank, ensuring they know they are not alone. The idea is simple yet powerful: if you know someone who deserves a little extra love and support, you can nominate them for a surprise $500 gift that will warm their hearts just in time for the holidays.
In a world that can sometimes feel heavy, the story of Frank Pate reminds us all about the power of community spirit and the importance of lifting each other up, especially in trying times. This already promising season gets a little brighter with the kindness of folks like Frank leading the charge.
