In the heart of Chicago, the festive air of the Democratic National Convention is eerily juxtaposed against the backdrop of bitter disagreements. The towering concern casting a shadow over the resounding speeches and the glitz of the primetime slots is the division between the Democratic establishment and its left flank over Israel’s war in Gaza.
The ongoing Israel-Gaza war, undeniably one of the most catastrophic conflicts in recent history. It broke out after a Hamas attack claimed 1,200 lives in Israel on October 7th. Since then, Gaza health authorities report that more than 40,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the turmoil. As a result, this shadowy specter of disagreements over the Biden-Harris administration’s approach to the conflict has loomed large over the Convention.
For many, the Convention is seen less as a demonstration of party unity and more as a potential forum for significant unrest. Tens of thousands of protestors are predicted to gather around the event, ready to make their voices heard. The potential for high-profile disruptions is too real to dismiss.
Reinforcing the theme of unity, Convention planners have enacted several strategies in an attempt to alleviate the concerns of both Muslim and Jewish Americans. The Convention’s schedule is set to feature speeches from the families of the American hostages held by Hamas, and a platform for prominent Muslim politician – Keith Ellison, Minnesota’s progressive attorney general.
Additional efforts include the anticipated speech from Ms. Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, where he will express his pride in his Jewish heritage. Moreover, the Democratic platform outlines its commitment to the security of Israel.
Aiming to establish a dialogue, Julie Chavez-Rodriguez, Ms. Harris’s campaign manager, held multiple meetings recently. The discussions aimed at understanding the apprehensions of Arab Americans and some delegates of the Democratic primary voters who had cast “uncommitted” votes as a measure of protest against Biden’s Israel policy.
Despite these deliberate efforts to build bridges, the convention will inevitably be overshadowed by the large-scale protests against the current administration’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian situation. The path forward for the Democratic Party is paved with tensions and the need for a balanced approach to placate various factions within the organization.
