Melissa Miller, a Chattanooga native, grew up in local public housing and journeyed through the drudgery of renting. Now, she is the proud first in her family to own a home, thanks to the pathway to homeownership provided by Habitat. Miller is the owner of the Faith Build Home built in 2024.
Predominantly driven by her desire to provide her son, Elijah, with greater opportunities, Miller sees homeownership as an avenue to shape their own rules and determine their narrative. “When we live in and own our own home, we can make our own rules. Therefore, I eagerly anticipate hearing my son exclaim, ‘This is our home!'”, she said.
Wilma Crockett, the proud new owner of the Women Build Home, also had her eyes set on homeownership for years. Crockett, a mother of four, a grandmother to 22 and a longtime Chattanooga resident who has spent over four decades in the same job. “It fills my heart with gratitude to be chosen for the Women Build home, and that my dreams of owning a home are finally taking shape,” she said.
The dedication ceremony for the new homes was graciously sponsored by several private and corporate entities. The 2024 Women Build presented sponsors were Real Estate Partners & Hamico. On the other hand, the Faith Build Home received generous sponsorship from McKee Foods and various local churches.
