Habitat for Humanity Celebrates Double Dedication Ceremony in Chattanooga

Melissa Miller and Wilma Crockett Walk the Path to Homeownership

Chattanooga, TN – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga celebrated a momentous occasion this week as it honored new homeowners, Melissa Miller and Wilma Crockett, in a double dedication ceremony. The ceremony marks a significant milestone for Habitat homeowners who complete the homeownership process, which includes various educational efforts and “sweat equity” – hundreds of hours of hard work.

“Home dedications are akin to a graduation,” said Jens Christensen, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga. “Our new homeowners have committed countless hours of effort to this cause, and as they reach the threshold of homeownership, they are fully equipped to embrace any challenges that may come their way. It is with great pleasure that we celebrate this major life event with Melissa, Wilma, and their families.”

First in the Family – The Story of Melissa Miller

Melissa Miller, a Chattanooga native, grew up in local public housing and journeyed through the drudgery of renting. Now, she is the proud first in her family to own a home, thanks to the pathway to homeownership provided by Habitat. Miller is the owner of the Faith Build Home built in 2024.

Predominantly driven by her desire to provide her son, Elijah, with greater opportunities, Miller sees homeownership as an avenue to shape their own rules and determine their narrative. “When we live in and own our own home, we can make our own rules. Therefore, I eagerly anticipate hearing my son exclaim, ‘This is our home!'”, she said.

A Dream Realized – The Journey of Wilma Crockett

Wilma Crockett, the proud new owner of the Women Build Home, also had her eyes set on homeownership for years. Crockett, a mother of four, a grandmother to 22 and a longtime Chattanooga resident who has spent over four decades in the same job. “It fills my heart with gratitude to be chosen for the Women Build home, and that my dreams of owning a home are finally taking shape,” she said.

“As these two families embrace their new lives in their respective homes, we are emphatically reminded about the importance of building robust communities for the future,” commented Christensen. “The Miller and Crockett families, now neighbors, will undoubtedly bring their unique presence to the neighborhood, contributing to a stronger community.”

Sponsors Making the Difference

The dedication ceremony for the new homes was graciously sponsored by several private and corporate entities. The 2024 Women Build presented sponsors were Real Estate Partners & Hamico. On the other hand, the Faith Build Home received generous sponsorship from McKee Foods and various local churches.
