Chattanooga is buzzing with excitement as the city kicks off its annual Hip-Hop Week from October 3rd to October 13th, a fantastic celebration of everything hip-hop! This event aims to highlight the cultural movement and its incredible influence across music, fashion, dance, and much more. With an array of activities planned, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a die-hard hip-hop fan or just curious about its impact on society.
The week-long festivities kicked off with various events scheduled throughout Chattanooga, offering something for everyone! According to Sammy Loudermilk, a co-founder and board member of Hip-Hop Week, this year’s celebration is extra special. “We are not just showcasing the music; we are highlighting other aspects of hip-hop culture that are often overlooked,” he explained. Events include workshops, seminars on the music business, dance showcases, and even a family day with the Chattanooga Football Club!
The keynote speaker this year will be none other than Bun B, a renowned rap artist from Houston known for his powerful performances and entrepreneurial spirit. He has not only made waves in the music industry but has also co-founded Trill Burgers, a popular restaurant in Houston.
This year, Hip-Hop Week will feature a variety of helpful workshops focused on financial literacy, careers in the music industry, and essential resources for aspiring artists. “We saw a need for artists to gain business skills, and we wanted to pivot from just putting on shows to truly empowering our local talent,” Loudermilk said as he discussed the evolution of the event over the past several years.
Erika Roberts, a passionate poet and committee member, shared her sentiments about the fun and educational aspects of the week. “This week is not just for hip-hop enthusiasts; it’s for anyone who appreciates creativity,” she said. “It’s essential for us to celebrate what hip-hop has brought to our communities over the years.”
Hip-Hop Week kicks off with a Hip-Hop Family Day at Finley Stadium, followed by an exciting Hype in Fashion pop-up event featuring acclaimed director Hype Williams. The week continues with various activities like a Beats & Ballots voter registration party and a unique [art]chitecture opening reception showcasing how hip-hop influences art and design.
As the events progress, attendees can look forward to a night dedicated to community art, with an Obbie West poetry session set for Thursday, leading up to a night featuring Bun B and performances by local talents at the Black & Yellow Affair.
Many community members have expressed their excitement about Hip-Hop Week. Shoey Russell, a local DJ and long-time attendee, shared, “This event is a fantastic way for everyone in the local hip-hop scene to come together. It’s enriching to connect and learn from one another.”
The evolution of Hip-Hop Week is a testament to the growth of the hip-hop community in Chattanooga. What began as a small gathering has transformed into a city-wide celebration, supported by local businesses and artists alike. “The knowledge and networking opportunities here are invaluable,” Russell continued, inviting anyone curious about hip-hop to attend the events and feel the energy.
