If you’ve strolled by the riverfront in recent days, you may have spotted two impressive ships that seem to have sailed right out of the history books. Yes, you heard it right! The Niña and Pinta, replicas of the famous vessels that Christopher Columbus set sail on over five hundred years ago, are currently docked here in our very own city!
A Floating Piece of History
The Niña and Pinta are more than just ships; they are living museums. The Niña, the most historically accurate replica of a Portuguese Caravel in the world, was crafted without any power tools, relying solely on traditional building methods. Can you imagine that? Built entirely by hand in a shipyard in Brazil, this masterpiece took about three years to complete, making her first journey in 1992. Meanwhile, the Pinta, which joined the fleet later, was constructed just a little differently. She began her voyage in 2005 after taking the same three-year labor of love to build.

At the helm of these magnificent ships is Stephen Sanger, who has proudly served as the senior captain for a decade. His passion for sailing and history blends beautifully as he navigates these vessels across the country. The aim of their travels is not only to celebrate the maritime heritage but also to educate and inspire those who visit.
